Early last week the county inspected my coop and run and yesterday, it became official; the permit i received in the mail makes my chickens legitimate. The chickies were very happy to be able to stop looking over their shoulders and take off their hats and dark glasses : )

I'm hoping someone can help me with a birthday present for my Mom.
A few years ago Mom bought a couple of straight run white silkie bantams from a feed store. Turned out one was a hen and one is a rooster.
She loved them so much and spoiled the snot out of them, then she learned that she could enter them in the county fair. This was exciting. So she discovered all she needed to know about preparing them and one day I took a day off work to help bathe then blow dry her chickens with her. What a fun experience!

You should see the look on people's faces when you tell them that's what you did on your day off, it's priceless.
Anyway, the hen won a ribbon, seems like it was the best you could get. The roo didn't get anything but he's a spoiled little snot.
The hen was so sweet and would cuddle up to Mom all the time, talk to her while Mom was doing the dishes (chicken was out on the deck) and really brought a lot of joy to my Mom. Then tragedy struck.
Mom bought her chicken food from a local feed store in a big 50# bag and had only had it for a few weeks but all of the sudden her hen started acting weird. Long story short, the food was spoiled even though the date on it said it should have been good. It paralyzed Mrs. Puff and then killed her after she started to make a recovery and was able to walk again.
That was 2 years ago, Mom still has the roo, and he's still spoiled, but she misses her hen. The roo just isn't the same as he doesn't like to be cuddled and picked up.
Mom's birthday is on April 24th and she asked me the other day to help her find another white silkie bantam hen for her birthday. Obviously I can't just order from the feed store because they're straight run and I'd be in trouble if I ended up with a roo.
I've been trying to figure out how to make this happen. Any ideas?

SaltLakeSpice - congratulations! Do you have to have your coop inspected every year?

Tamrajh - have you checked on KSL.com's classifieds section for silkies? They have a section under Pets and Livestock for Poultry/Gamebirds. You can search for Silkie or Silkies in there and it'll pull up all the ads. Sunnybrooke Farm in Sandy has a couple of ads for silkies right now. You could also post an ad of your own in that section, saying that you're looking for a silkie. Good luck!

Oh, I wish I could help. Pls keep us posted. Such a nice chicken story (except for the losing hen part). I'm sure your mom was heartbroken and I hope you find a wonderful new hen for her to love. It will be one lucky girl for sure!

Yes, I've been watching KSL for quite a while now and there is a black pair on there now, but she insists on having a white hen. (it's her birthday, she should be able to choose her present so that's fine)
I also placed an ad yesterday saying I was looking for one.
Sunnybrooke farms is hatching 5 white silkie bantams on Thursday so it looks like we'll be getting some from there, hope one is a hen, and then sell the others on KSL. I'm just glad we've found a hatchery close to home that happened to have some hatching out this week. What luck!
Talked to Mom about it today, she's so excited!

kimbobim - I know you have to get a permit every year, so i would imagine that they would at least do a drive by and make sure everything looks ok. I doubt they would have to remeasure every year unless of course I moved my coop. Even if they did need to do it again though, it would be fine because the inspector lady was a delight, super nice and friendly : )

I am in Central Utah...good old Spanish Fork. I love chickens! (That may be why I am on this forum)

I have an Americana, A black copper marans, a Buff orpington, another....pullet Americana, and a 4 little mutt chicks. I am in the process of hatching out some Maran/Americana mixes. Only 6 days out, but I'm seeing plenty already.

I lost an Australorp today..very sad...so if anyone close by has a young hen, or pullet they would like to sell let me know. I really like them, they are sweethearts, and my grandkids liked my older one. Don't be shy..let me know..
