Cynthia,

So sorry about your Australorp

She sounds like she was pretty special.
I hope you are able to find another Australorp soon.

We lost our little Australorp on Saturday, the first chicken we have had die. Other than the ones the dog got. We were able to pick up a new 3 week old from Christie at SunnyBrooke Farm. I know it would be quite a drive for you but she has tons of chicks of all ages it seems and is super nice.

For anyone wanting to check if their city has a chicken ordinance, I have a file with ordinances from several utah cities and towns. They are all zipped together at the following address: Utah Chickens. It is a good resource for those trying to formulate an ordinance or work with their city councils.

Good luck!

ZombieChicken - I live in Salt Lake City proper so it's a permit related to the city ordinance. County animal services are just the folks who administer the permits and monitor compliance with the city rules.

Cynthia -- ", did the quick wing tip check.."??? I've never heard of that. I think I may have two roo's... A americana oops and a banty. oh and some cochin banties.

Thanks!

I do know that the chick has to be of a certain breed? Not sure. But I do it anyway and go from there, I did pretty good last time...4 out of 5..they were mixes. The wing splits, the first top half is where you look for uneven wing tips...should be a hen, but that's a guess. I've tried venting..not for me.

Good luck, just have to wait until you hear that funny sound the roos try to do at first. Cute. I checked these Australorps out the same way,,guess we will see if I did good.

Thank you! Vent checking is not for me either, got enough when I cleaned pasty-butts.

So if I understand correctly, I spread the wing out (gently obviously) and the half that starts at the tip of the wing... if uneven is most likely a hen.... and if nice and perfect would be a roo? So our girls have bad hair days in other words?

Is there an age when this is more accurate or does it work on little chickies too? My girls (hopefully mostly girls) are about 9 +/- wks.

I just love it when the roo's start to crow, it's like my son when his voice started changing.

Thanks again for the info! We're building a coop (again) and may plan a "man cave" for the roo's if I end up having more than one.

So.... I put my Delaware Pullets into the Big Girl Coop on Thursday. I am pleasantly surprised with how intelligent they are compared to the other babies I got this year. They started out as fairly intrepid explorers, venturing out of the coop the morning after I put them out there. I was expecting to have to pluck wayward Delawares from trees, as I had to with the other babies, but they didn't get stuck anywhere. They haven't struggled with understanding getting back around the fence, and they haven't struggled with finding their way back from any part of the yard.

All in all, they are much more organized, intelligent, and thoughtful than any other chickens I've had so far. The two Delawares also stick closely together, but that's to be expected since they were basically raised together. That warming hen I had with them initially doesn't seem to be too interested in hanging out with them, though. I would have thought that the little runt would have cried for a nice warm hen.....

Oh, and Tangerine has been watching their exploration closely, and making sure that no neighborhood cats molest them. I think that's probably a good thing, due to the runt being somewhat vulnerable.
