Welcome! There's a wealth of knowledge here and a lot of really nice people. Warning tho... chickens are hazardous! I think that should be the next Animal Planet series "Chicken Hoarders Oh MY!!".

Seriously tho, they can be addicting. I tend to want "just a couple more" to round out the egg colors, get another breed, pretty much any excuse I can come up with! lol

Welsummers is a breed I've wanted. Hmmmm..... ::No, I don't need another chicken, I don't need another chicken...repeats until she's convinced herself::

We have one that has tried a couple of times.... although none go to the extreme of kimbobim's hen. Our female dogs do that, but a hen, that's hilarious!

to late i just picked up two more!! i'm in trouble.

I think my illness is at a new level of severity.... I picked up ten fertile eggs for my broody to hatch out. She has been setting as of last Thursday the 15th.

On a related topic, I may have 4 or 5 straight run peeps up for grabs in the very near future.

So.... There are some Red Stars, Buff Cochins, Buff Orpingtons, and one Americauna that is likely already spoken for. I think that's all of them. I'll double check with the lady who gave me the huevos.

The deal is, I have ten total eggs and I need to return half of whatever hatches as payment for the eggs. The rest I can keep, sell, or give away. My best friend is going to get the Americauna (provided she doesn't get another Americauna in the next three weeks).

In the interest of full disclosure...... I don't know how I'll tell the peeps apart by breed (the lady who gave me the eggs may be able to help), and no one I know can sex them until they start to crow.

edited to add -- Good luck w/the hatch - I hope it's a huge success!

oh boy.... I would love a couple full-size (as in not banty) buff orps peeps. I'd even keep a roo if there was a hen and he was nice. We thought we had purchased a buff orp (from the "buff orp pen at IFA)... how on EARTHH did we miss those furry feet!!!

Anyway, buffy is kinda opposite of most cochins, rather a dumb cluck. We're pretty certain she's a he but I don't know that I have the heart to "free range" him like the other roos.

I hv a cute buff orp roo story.... We hadn't enlarged our coop for the new chicks yet (now almost 8 mo old) so they spent nights in the barn. One door had chicken wire for light/air, opposite of roosts. ANYWAY, one morning one roo is on his side, can't move, no sign of injury but some broken wire pulled outwards. Best we could assume is a racoon tried getting in and he might hv been bit, scraped whatever.

So he came to live in the house (in a big dog crate). At first he just laid on his side and I'd spoon feed him electrolytes/antibotics/feed/etc. I'd take him outside and hold him up and do little leg aerobics, ah 1-2-3-4, other leg, ah-1-2-3-4, lol!

Well I be danged if that didn't slowly work! He was in the house a couple months and we could be watching TV in the dark and I could call out "MRrrrr Chickeennnn" softly and he'd bawwk and answer! He was so friendly (while the other roos turned very mean). He got all better and I put him in the coop, all seemed fine, went out to check just an hr later and poor guy had his bloody head in a corner and was shaking like a leaf! I was so upset and called him and he came running right into my arms. He came back into the house till he was healed then the other roo's got moved and he lived in a crate a couple days till the hens accepted him. He was always so friendly. I had to sell the whole lot and losing him broke my heart but they went to a good home and I made the guy promise he could NEVER be eaten... besides, being injured by a coon could cause concern for his meat. So he became a happy stud muffin. I still think about him. Some chickens just grab your heart and never let go.

My mom works with a guy who had an extremely tame pet roo. His name was Spanish for "My Little One". He lived indoors in a cage, but got walked every day outside. His favorite food was Eggo waffles. Anyway, he ate some sewing needles and died. So, Omar, the guy who used to have "My Little One" may be interested in a peep or two.

I'M A DADDY!!

Exactly 19 weeks to the day that our Delawares-RIR-BPR-GSL's were hatched, we got our first tiny egg today!
Don't know which one it was, but I have my suspicions...

(And my roll out nest boxes worked great!)

So, that brings me to the 2nd part of my email.

I've currently got 36 birds and 15 layers (16 as of today!). They are housed in 2 coops and a chicken tractor. The 4x8 coop is plumb full with my 12 "big girls" and I can't fit any more in with them. The newer coop (8x8) holds the 21 "baby girls" (The Delly's, Golden sex links, etc.), and they fit just perfect too.
And the chicken tractor has my 3 Americanas that lay wonderful blue eggs.

I'd like to put my Americanas in with the rest of the flock, but don't have room in either of the big coops. So I'd like to sell three of my 'big girls'....

I wanted to wait until the 'baby girls' would cover the eggs lost by selling three 'big girls', and that looks like in the next couple of weeks that should happen.

Here's what I've got to choose from;

5 - Barred Plymouth Rocks
4 - Red Sex Links
2 - Buff Orpingtons (wasn't someone looking for these?)
1 - Black Australorp

All but one of the Orpingtons were hatched Feb 1st 2009. One Orpington was hatched November of 2009.
And, I'd kind of like to keep the Black Australorp. She's my favorite, and the 'mama' of my November Orp.

These 12, plus my 3 Americanas, lay an average 9-11 eggs/day.
That's a little lower output than their first year, but still pretty solid.

I'd like to get $15/each for them, and want to give you guys first shot at them before they go on KSL.

private message me if you're interested.

Marty
