Utah!

I have been blessed with broody hens. After hatching several batches I would like to switch up the genetics. Anyone in Southern Utah want to sell me some fertile fresh eggs? We could meet in Cedar or I would pay for you to ship them to me.

bragabit--Hafta tell you I LOVE your avatar! What a BIG, FLUFFY HEN and itty bitty little chick (or is it a little legged egg??)!

The privacy curtains seem to be working out. The first day I hung them, I had one chicken immediately use the facility. I've been getting 2-3 eggs inside the coop since then. And Mongo appears to be working on an egg right now. I have to get some pine shavings into the nesting boxes now that they are using them, because NoName's cracked when she laid it this morning.

The other Cuckoo Marans is still broody - I saw her this morning, but she is so broody that she tried to take my hand off when I tried to catch her. I'd try and catch her sleeping, if I could figure out where her stupid nest is.

By consensus, we decided that if the rest of the peeps don't start laying indoors, we are going to lock them in for a couple of days once it cools off. With this heat, we really have to let them wander into the woods during the day to keep cool. We can go with loosing a few more eggs in the next 3-4 weeks while we wait. I'm hoping that the raccoons are finding what we aren't, because I can't cope with exploding sulfur bombs on my property.

I hope they keep working.

I can't believe you have a chicken named Mongo - that's my boss's nickname. What's the story behind your hen's name?

The story is that I bought a bunch of day-old chicks at the IFA and one of them was exceptionally large. I started calling that one Mongo because of her size. I figured that she really wasn't day-old like all the rest, but it turns out she's just a big freaking hen. She's a Cuckoo Marans, and I don't know how big they usually get, but she's much bigger than the other Cuckoo Marans and the RIR's and weighs about 10 lbs.

P.S. Mongo's egg cracked as well, but the membrane was still intact and the ants didn't get to it so I will fry it tomorrow morning. I did get the pine shavings in when Mongo was done with the facilities, so hopefully no more cracked eggs. And I will be more diligent about keeping pine shavings in the boxes now that they use those facilities.

That's a cute story! Although I must say, WOW, a 10 pounder. Our biggest is around six pounds. I don't even think the rooster weighs that much!

Yeah, she's a big girl. She also snores so loudly that I can hear her at night when I have my window open. I wonder how long she'll live with her size, because I seriously think she must have some chicken acromegaly or Prader-Willi or something like that.

She also just barely started laying, so it's kind of amusing to see these little fart eggs come out of such a gigantic chicken.

Kaysville, Utah here. We started with 3 chicks for a school project and have caught the "chicken fever". So glad we did as our chickens are our only pets that help take care of our family.
