I'm about to set some eggs in the incubator. All marans. If I have a good hatch rate I'll have extras. If I have a great hatch rate I'll have a lot of extras.

No experience or ideas on my little 1/2 naked chick?

She's still alive but she's not as big as the other Delawares. She's in an aquarium, inside their brooder so she isn't all alone and she gets a little extra heat. Feathers don't look like their coming in. She is eating & drinking ok and I take her out for exercise.

Just don't want to lose the little girl.

Thanks,
julie

I don't think so, they stay pretty spread out. It's on her chest too. At first I thought it was the feeder bar but I have 50+ chicks and I put the bar back on because they were wasting a lot of food. Everyone else is fine. I had some of her fluff fall out in my hand just while holding her.

I'm giving her flax seed (which works wonders for horses coats) and started on little extra protein and goodies (and grit) to keep her happy and appetite up. I'm just floored. Same diet as everyone else's. Perhaps a genetic thing?

Oh -- Marty? You've raised lots of Delawares. Her coloring on her wings very light compared to the other 3 Delawares I got with her. Do they color in at different rates or is this maybe related?

I hate loosing any chick but I'm attached to the little girl so hoping for any ideas.

Thanks!
julie

Totally forgot (been really sick) so I called just now. Zero help. Said it wouldn't be genetic, had no idea, I'm doing everything right, and to hope her adult feathers grow in. Gave me a $2.78 credit which I sure hope doesn't jinx her life! Told him never mind on the credit but he did it the same for the extra care she's needing.

Thanks for the reminder to call them tho!

Wow, no idea on this one. Have been reading your post on the other thread here. Can't say that I can help you.

On the wings, I split my latest 50 into two tubs. One tub looks like the wings are darker than the other tub. More black on them. So, could just be differing heat. (Lower temperature birds will feather out faster).

Guess you just have a runt that needs to be hand raised. When her other feathers come in at 5 or 6 weeks, try to incorporate her in with the rest of the flock. You've either got your favorite chicken ever, or a big disappointment on the horizon.

I had a silver laced wyendotte like that. The other chicks wouldn't stop picking on her no matter what I did. Ended up selling her at about 3 weeks. She ended up dying at just over a year old. No idea why, they just found her dead one morning. I'm convinced that some bird are just like that.

(unlike the 6 birds I got at IFA last year, and had 3 of them die within 9 months... I've never had any other problems with the rest of my flock... grrr...)

just found this thread and thought i'd say hello. I'm just getting into the whole chicken addiction after telling my wife "no, we don't need any chickens" for about two years. We are located in salt lake city near between the base of big cottonwood and little cottonwood canyon. we are building an 8'x3.5' coop with lots of light to keep the eggs coming in the winter. i'll try to get a few photos up in the near future as we progress.

btw, thanks for all the info available here. it's given us an idea of how to get started.
