Oh, my! I'm feeling so loved and welcomed by BYC already and I don't even have my ducks yet! (But they're hatching at the hatchery today, so Happy Birthday to my ducklings!)
By this time tomorrow, I will be a proud Momma Duck.

Just a warning that most probably already know but I wouldnt hv guessed it wld hv happened..

My girls are 6-8 wks old and in a 10x10 dog kennel/brooder in the garage now (w/3 brooder lights and big nest area). My daughter fed them a warm mash last night in light weight pie tins (cheaper than Marie Calendar ones so lighter than those). Next morning she found a tin flipped over with one of our little buff silkies under it.

This little bird was big enough she/he could hv flipped it but didn't, probably just hunkered down in the dark and then the cold set in on the tin and took it's little life.

From now on it's paper plates! Just wanted to pass this on as we've used cheapie pie tins in the past and never had this problem. Won't happen again here! Poor little chick.

I feel so bad.

I'm in Pleasant Grove, born and raised!

We just recently purchased two Buff Orpingtons and two RIR's. We are new to this chicken raising thing and are very excited to have them. I can't wait until we can move them outside, but I got to get working on the coop and run first. They are only 2+ weeks old and are starting to get some feathers, mostly on their wings and tails. If you have any advice for me about raising chickens, please let me know.

RIR are the best egg layers, Buff Orpingtons, 'eh... not so much. They are big pretty birds though.

here's the 90% finished coop. we still have to cut a pop door, add some more ventilation and tighten up the security. the chicks will be moving out there in a week or so with a lamp.

i have a feeling they'll enjoy the cherry tree this summer.
