Thanks Shinx, but I am waiting for my SLW. Lisa knows how long I've waited for a SLW! lol..not that long really, but when us chicken addicts get something in their brain, and think they have one they can keep, then can't, well, what a let down. I am getting lots of babies on the first part of Feb..like the very fist part. I have 5 SLW pullets ordered, so I will get her.

Lisa..is it cold in Logan? It usually is at this time of year! We were cold with the wind chill this morning. Good ol Spanish Fork often has a morning wind. Nice in the summer though.\\
I had an EE quit on me. Candled tonight. So now I only have one EE, and 5 Ameraucana eggs. Couldn't see in the blue eggs at all! That's a problem at this point..they get so dark, don't know at lock down, so you just leave them, and say a prayer.

Hey anyone that drops in, and thinks that Shinx made it a real learning and fun experience by sharing her cam time with us while her eggs hatched..go and submit her for the education award..I did. It's easy. Go to the index, at the top, there is the BYC feedback and announcements..click it..it will have a very easy form to do.

With the sun out today it was nice....felt cold this morning when I let the girls out, I did not look at the temps but it sure did seem chilly here too. I wish you the best luck with your remaining babies.....hoping they all are ok

and hope you get the colors you are wanting. And it is so sad about losing one...and your silver eggs

Glad you can get some more.
The Partridge Cochin (my war hero) is turning into a real snot with the babies, she chewed on the black tail of Laverne today while I was at the funeral and she may be next to go. Grrr. Their feathers were perfect, I am pretty mad at her for messing them up on the one. It is funny, I knew if I was gone all day something would happen out there, I could just feel it when I left.
She may get locked out in the run tomorrow night if she does not behave tonight. I know she can handle the cold because she voluntarily used to sleep out there all the time when she was the victim. We really better get the whole area expanded a bit when it warms up. I think they need more room, maybe that is why I keep getting one that picks on the others.

so call me crazy but i am thinking about a pair of ducks, a male and a female. the breed would be muscovy. my friend said they are super quiet and are great egg layers. it would be fun to have little ducklings running around. they would be in with the chickens and the rabbit. i am still just thinking about it but i wanted to hear what you all think

I've got three ducks. Actually started out with Ducks before Chickens. I live in a residential area as well so it was sorta touch and go as far as neighbors are concerned at first (even though our city ordinance allows 2). However my neighbors LOVE our ducks. The kids all come over to see them all the time. I've got 2 females and a male. The females are a Cayuga and a Swedish Mix, and the male is a Black Swedish. My females can be noisy but usually only in the day when they see someone, they like to tell people "here I am!" they also got a lot quieter after their first year.

Some notes about ducks -

1. They are messy. Waaaay messy. They poop all the time. In fact my chickens are so much easier to clean up after that it shocked me when I got chickens how easy they are to clean up after. Ducks don't require a pond to live but are much happier if they have one. We used a kiddy plastic sandbox this last year but I'm going to put a duck pond into the run this year as while it worked it was a pain in the butt to dump and made the run all sorts of messy.

2. Egg production is good! My ducks are both still laying. The production has dropped down where we only get one egg a day from the two but we NEVER miss a day. It's been 120 days since we missed an egg from at least one. In the spring, summer, fall we always had two eggs 6 out of 7 days. My wife loves the duck eggs and they are the BEST to bake with.

3. I keep my ducks and chickens in the same run but it's fairly large. Just make sure if you do that you have an area dedicated to the ducks water (the need water they can wash their bills in at least even if you don't have some sort of swimming water for them) that is away from the chickens coop.

4. My ducks would only go into my coop to mess things up for the chickens. By mess I mean poop. And by poop I mean ALL OVER THE PLACE. It was a pain to clean out. So I made the ramp into the coop to small for them to waddle up and gave them a little plastic dog house to go into should they need to get out of the weather. That said I've only seen them use it once to get out of the weather. Ducks are crazy and LOVE the sown and rain. Anytime it rains and I have the pond out and they RUN for it as fast as they can . . . and then have as much sex as they can.

5. They eat a lot. My three ducks probably eat as much as 5-6 chickens. It's not a big deal in the summer when I can let them forage in my backyard but this winter I've been going through a lot of feed.

All that said my ducks are probably 100x more entertaining then my chickens. Especially in the water. Buying feeder goldfish and putting then in the pond is one of the most hilarious things you will ever see. They are a lot more work in some ways, but in others not as much; you don't really need to worry too much about a coop (like I said dog house works great) and they winter so much better then chickens. We are hoping to hatch some ducklings in the spring too!

Oh also I wouldn't consider putting 1 male and 1 female in there, you'd need at least one more female. I'm pushing it with a 2 to 1 ratio as it is. If you only have one female the male WILL most likely hurt her or hurt your chickens. Male ducks are very . . . needy.

I am with jwoo on the ducks. They poop a ton. We had a few, and had this idea they would just be in the yard, but they poop awful watery poop with like every four steps, I swear! They would come on the patio and just leave loads of poop everywhere, we could not keep up with it. They step in it, drag it all over, it was a giant mess within days, we ended up giving them to a friend of ours who had acreage to let them run around on. I was also surprised at how manageable chicken poop seemed after having ducks. I would definitely agree you need a designated space, they would muck up your coop really fast :)and because it is so wet i do not think you could control it with DE, it would just be a wet muddy poop area because they make a mess with the water also, chickens are much dryer and easier to keep clean.

And the cost to feed them is a lot higher. Our 2 ducks ate more than our 9 chickens. That was a big downside for us
