Utah!

Awww, Cynthia, you're going to make me cry. You are so sweet to nominate me.

I really want one of your chicks, my biggest obstacle is driving all the way down there. Are you planning any trips to the Salt Lake Valley anytime soon? I totally hear you on the SLW. They are so beautiful. I plan to hatch some in one of my kids' classrooms this spring from that breeder up here that I told you about. As soon as her breeding pens are going, I'll buy some of her eggs and set them. I've seen her chickens and they are STUNNING. Show quality for sure.

I've tossed the idea of ducks around. I decided I'd want them to have a pond though, and I don't know that I want to deal with that. Plus, we had ducks when I was a kid, and they were extremely aggressive. Sometimes it was fun to run around the back yard and have ducks chase us around. Other times (like when they caught you and nipped your legs), it wasn't as fun.

I hear you on ducks. They can be fun. I hatched some for the fun of it..had someone want them as soon as they hatched. The Harlequins..they are supposed to be one of the sweetest, most calm. I've heard the same about some chickens too...but, found out different. Guess it's just different personality.
I have some other Ameraucana eggs coming, that will not be hatching until about 3 and half weeks from now..sooo..you can think on it..don't think you have to get any, it's all right. I actually have someone else here that wants as many that she can have that hatch out of these that are due next week. Still worried about air sacs..one is really bad. I draw the lines like you did with yours, so I can see where the air sac is. I am going to try and place them kind of side ways..like half air sac up, half baby up. See how that works.
Maybe they will have the new BYC up by tomorrow night..we will all be trying to figure out how to find each other. lol....

Ok just tossing this out there, but - Sphinx, if by some chance I make a trip down to the Provo area in the next month or so, and you and Cynthia are both open to it, maybe I could swing by SF and pick up a chick for you? I will give you the heads up if I am planning any trips in that time span so that you can give me a yay or nay. I'm located in West Valley, so it wouldn't be nearly as far for you to drive to pick up something

(Your webcam page has a location on it, so that's what I'm basing the distance off of)

with all this chick hatching talk i am now wondering if someone sells cream legbar hatching eggs?

You mean locally in Utah? I know River Rock Family Farm got a trio of Cream Legbar chickens last fall. Last I heard, one of the pullets had died, and the other one hadn't started laying yet. I'll be watching them closely. I've been toying with the idea of jumping on that train, and trying to sell hatching eggs or chicks. I hate to put that kind of money in chickens though, especially after my predator incident.

Red, that wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Most of my family lives in the Salt Lake, and I am down there every week (dh even works in West Valley).

I am remembering now that we've been invited to a friend's house in Lehi in mid-february for a Valentines' Party, maybe I can meet up with you then, Cynthia.

Cynthia, you remember how bad my chick's air cells were, right? They were pretty awful, and then I incubated them on their sides, which probably didn't help things.

One of my chicks seems to have a wider stance than the others. I've seen pictures of spraddle leg, and it looks like the chick is doing the splits.

This chick doesn't look like that at all, it just seems like her legs are set slightly wider apart then her nestmates. She can absolutely run around ok. If I do put her on a smooth surface, her left leg does seem to slide out a little bit.

I heard that setting the chick in a teacup/coffee cup would be a less invasive way to treat spraddle leg, as it gently holds their legs in.

I put in the cup, and the bugger jumped out within 5 minutes.

She still just doesn't seem quite perfect, but doing the bandaid trick seems a little extreme. Is it?

Hi Shinx..I usually use the the black electrical tape..can you believe that? It works real well, and is the more gentle tape. It sounds like your baby only needs a couple of days with it on. Just make the legs straight, then put the tape on where you feel it looks to be pretty straight from the hip down. I make it so it isn't real close, they can actually wobble around pretty good with it on. The trick, do it by yourself if you can. :)
