Utah!

BITE MY TONGUE! MY CHICKS CAME ABOUT TEN MIN. AFTER WRITING THIS..DICK IS AN HONEST MAN.
Not only did he send me my chicks, but, I went to my paypal, and he had taken the money off for the first batch of eggs that I sent pics to him of, the same ones I sent to this thread. When he saw them, had written me back saying, don't put those in a botor, I'll send you more. Well, the more never has shown up, but he did send the chicks when he found out that the eggs never showed. The lady from the P.O. brought them to me, in her car..she said they should have come yesterday. Sending pictures now. :))

Don't bite to hard. It hurts.

Sorry I didn't see. But what kind were they and where did you get them from. Would you recommend the seller?

I bought some eggs from Dickhortsman, Silver Laced Partridge Rock. The eggs were out too long. He sent more. So far, they haven't shown up..so, he went ahead and sent me some chicks. They came today.
14 babies. Two were pretty weak. One didn't make it..the other one is still hangin in there.

Still working with my black EE. The yolk is pretty much absorbed, and the baby is making more noise, but on it's side. Have to work on that!

Well, three of my new babies have died. I wondered about one of the real big ones, it was walking around with the others, but it would lay around more than the others. So, three gone. That shipping must be hard on them. Makes me wonder how many die in all that transportation in the spring to all of the stores.
My black EE gets too picked on right now when in with them..so, my hubby put up a wire separation in the bin. It needs to build up its strength on one leg. Starting wobble around on it's belly, good sign, it's upright more than on it's side like it was yesterday. Pretty active, and..I can see puffy cheeks!

You lost another roo? Geez, I was hoping with the new year you'd have a little reprieve. Ugh, speaking of that I should have the horse vet out, but I can't afford it right now. I'm hoping it's just a bad sprain or bruise.

Yeah, he just up and died. As for your horse....yup, there right now and you probably already know they'll nerve block ($) and film ($$) to possibly say, yup a sprain. Check for heat in the hoof (kinda hard right now but try). Also take her temp and check her respirations. If all that is normal than just restrict movement (stall).

We have a pony that came up extremely lame and we made her a small stall and gave her our tack shed for shelter. Took about 3 wks but she's completely back to 100% use. We're probably going to keep her there for the winter. We can watch her intake of hay and this is her 3rd time. It started the week her best friend was killed last feb. I'm thinking stress induced founder but doesn't show all the signs.

Don't feel guilty either, unless this is a show/race/broodmare than stall rest is the best you can do for her. After you pay the vet big money that's usually the solution anyway. You may find navic and there are expensive ways to treat that but stall rest gives you a good baseline. Winter sux and it's a real good chance it's ice related.

Good luck with him/her.

Cynthia--Glad the EE made it out and is doing good! What color was the egg she was in? I have been meaning to ask--so with the black EE's I got from you, if the egg was blue they came from.....so that must mean the Roo was the BCM, and I remember you showing me pics that you thought might be the mom, but did not know if they were EE or Americauna. Do you know? Just curious :) Interesting all this breeding stuff....
Have you seen that second batch of eggs yet? I am thinking with these new chicks---it is so sad to lose a few, but likely better luck than if you would have hatched that many eggs, right? It seems like it is tough to get them all to hatch from watching and listening to you and Sphinx. Can you tell any signs of pullets/roos yet? Or do you have a guess on what you might have there?

So far I have used DE---spread around in the run, the coop and nests. If I am feeling particularly paranoid I throw some on the chickens :) Have not seen any mites. I also have some spray I buy at Petsmart for parakeets for mites/lice (it is cheaper than buying the stuff for chickens and has the same ingredients!) And I spray the coop down in the cracks and crevices with that when I clean it out. My Grandparents never used DE, but did use some of the spray.I started using the DE after reading about that on here. I do put Apple Cider Vinegar--6 T per 3 gallons in their water. Never heard about using Garlic, tell me about that---is it to keep them from getting worms or lice/mites? How much are you supposed to give? I like to use natural stuff like that rather than chemicals if possible....

Oh and I get my DE from Hoegger Supply, it is food grade 5 # bags for ten bucks, plus $5 for shipping for whatever quantity, so my nieghbor and I get a couple bags each and share the $5 shipping. If anybody knows where to get it cheaper do tell!

Sorry about your loss(es). :( It was great to see the pics tho, so springy-feeling (as compared to looking out the window!).

Hope everybody in N Utah made it through the rain ok! Lots of flooding....esp in Wellsville. Our yard had a lot of standing water last night but our crawlspace did not flood, last year we had tons of water and a muddy mess to clean up under there so I was worried. My chickens had some standing water coming into the run from the sides and I was out there pitching straw all over to keep them dry last night. They have a roof over, but the standing water came in from the sides because their dirt is so soft and sunken down in the run. Looks lots better this morning, thank goodness! If anbody my direction needs help with flooding or anything let us know! We would be glad to give a hand :)
