Utah!

Interesting again! Around my coop was just grass, but because of opening the doors and shavings/poop/feed falling out all the time my grass is about gone and it is getting messy. Thought about building a 3 foot border all the way around the run/coop area, like a giant raised bed/sandbox.... with railroad ties or something as a border, but was not sure what to put inside the three foot area of the border to keep it from being a mudhole right around the coop. Leaves/straw would be nice, I was thinking about putting a few bushes around too to make some shade for my girls, the leaves/ straw would help mulch them. Thanks for the ideas

oh and another good thing about the straw and leaves is bugs will hide in it so your girls will have a extra snack. i have lilac bushes around my coop. they get nice and tall, the flowers smell amazing and add good cover to the coop and they do give good shade and in the winter the leaves drop so the coop gets more sun

. i also have a apple tree that hangs over the run so all the windfall apples feed the girls. look up comfrey, its a plant with nice green leaves and i guess people feed it as a treat to chickens, it is a perennial, it grows like crazy and the leaves are a natural fertilizer so people just chop of some leaves and toss them to the ground. i will be planting a lot of it around the yard. i also plan on planting different types of bamboo because its good cover and the stocks make great perches for chickens. i also will be planting a ton of chard this year because it grows so well and the chickens and the rabbit love it. i still have a few plants alive in my garden

Wow, good thing I pulled up an old email. I'm supposed to get notified with new posts but haven't. so confused, I know I hv everything checked. oh well...

Very interesting on the goldfish! We put them iin our horse tank to cut down on algae, never thought about giving them to the chickens. I kinda like goldfish so this might be hard. I remember growing up and my mom would put the on the window sill above the kitchen sink. They'd get so excited when we'd walk up. My daughter can get some guppies at school... same thing?

What about just a regular fish? We have ponds and usually throw back the small ones, but I suspect they die anyways cause of the stress. Could the chickens get bones stuck? (I hv dogs can ya tell?!).

I do hope everyone's doin ok w/the weather. Just cold here. SO excited to meet Cynthia and get peepers.

OK how do you folks do it? This waiting is almost as bad as waiting for my daughters to come. I had one pip yesterday about 4 it finally hatched around 4 this morning. Then another one pipped around 5 this morning and has been sedentary since. I have 9 eggs to go in there. I can't wait for 12 hours each

Have to ask, where did you get your digital Therm/hydrom..?

I started out with 12 eggs 4 wyandotte's 4 mutt bantams, and 4 surprises went into lock down with 10 eggs. 2 of the bantams didn't make it. The one that hatched is a wyandotte and the one that is pipped is also a wyandotte. Have to tell ya if this keeps up. I wont have any hair left.
