White Rock Chicks FOR SALE!
A buddy of mine is selling a few White Barred Rock Chicks (like barred rocks, minus the barring) I'll be getting three of them, he bought 25. I'm just North of St George and he's got a farm on the outskirts St George. If anyone is interested he's asking $4 ea. They are vaccinated pullets from Ideal. Leave a reply here and I'll give you contact info.

Oh, so cute, thanks for sharing, MrsEmanual!!

Hello UtahChickenMom!!!!

Lockdown: When you incubate chickens, they are supposed to take 21 days to hatch (much like humans take 9 months, so give or take a bit). The first 18-19 days, they are supposed to be turned quite frequently, and it's sort of ok to take them out and candle them. In fact, some people claim that letting the eggs cool for 10 min or so each day is good for the chicks. The humidity should also be kept around 30-35%. The last 2-3 days, humidity should be bumped up to 70% or so. Also, the eggs should not be turned anymore, and you're not supposed to mess with them. They start shifting in the shell so that they can pip. If you take them out, it can make it harder for them to get into proper position. In addition, it can make the humidity drop, which makes for the chicks getting stuck in the shell.

Congrats on such a good hatch. I hope I do as well with my lavenders.
What are the breeds? I know you have a cute little bantam in there..love the colors!

Scare me half to death. I was writing a post to congrat. mse, and the power went out! I was saying..noooo! Two bators going, just put babies outside for the first night, with a light..and, there's the new babies I got today. It came back on about 5 seconds later. Just enough time to give me a heart attack! Whew! Hope it doesn't happen again, but longer.

Oh, I am more than happy to give anyone the fix needed here..baby chicks will be coming intto the stores before you know it.

birdman, I won't be taking the buff from Chiko..I have some buff Orpington eggs that will be hatching in a few weeks. I just thought I would offer a place for her if no one wanted it..I have so many chicks now, to go, eeny, meeny miny moe..as to what I want to keep. If you want a nice girl that will start laying soon, she would be a good one. She was last years late spring hatch. I've seen her since chiko took her, she is healthy..so go for it. A nice bird. Can't go wrong with Orpingtons. :)) I now also have these white Orpingtons that I got today. Need to place a few of those. Or a couple..all girls.
All my chicks are girls if anyone is wondering. Pullets.

I love knowing they are girls. The New Hampshires sure are cute fluffy little orange balls. They mature early, lay at, or before the 20th week~when they say chickens should start to lay. EE's are usually a little later, 6 or 7 months. But these are here now, and should be laying before fall. White Orpintons, should lay 20 to 24 weeks. Speckled Sussex, also around the same time as Orpingtons.
well another thing is i do not heat my coop and i seem to remember him heating his so it would not work so well now that i think about it. but if by chance he does not heat his coop then maybe we could make it work

Oh all these chicks, so so cute! Cynthia, they are gorgeous, cannot wait to see what they look like as they develop---and get some of those girls in my flock!! Thanks so much for sharing the cute baby pics!! My email alerts stopped coming yesterday, I was wondering why no one had posted so I got on to check....do not know why. Not sure if I am used to the new site yet

It feels like Spring has sprung after looking at all the babies. I have cabin fever, will somebody tell the weather man to give us some warmer temps? Ugh!

I have three Blue Wyandottes in there. Two bantams and 3 mutts not sure of the mix. I built my incubator and when I when to start incubating eggs. My chickens stop laying for a few days. So I asked a friend for some eggs well guess what he couldn't find any. Then I asked another friend he had some he was going to incubate but gave them to me instead. His were the bantams. Well guess what happened my chickens started laying. I manage to get for eggs out of mine and had six from the one friend. My chickens are the blues. Well the night before I was going to set the first friend brought over a bag of 7 eggs. So I went from no eggs to having 18 eggs

. The way I built my incubator i can only hold 12 at a time. So I Candled the eggs and picked and choose got it down to 12. And the rest is history. Now we are trying to figure out what to hatch next any one have silver lace wyandottes?.

That is not a good way to find out your still a live. Glad it was a short outage .

I'm now afraid of power outages. We could probably make something work, but I don't want to deal with it. I'm glad your eggs were ok, Cynthia.

msemanual, river rock farms has show quality SLW eggs, but I don't know that she's had them separated into breeding pens long enough yet.

Wow, very scary! I never thought about power outages and home incubators. Big companies hv back generators. I'll ask my husband what's the cheapest type of generator that could be a backup for home incubators only. We hv an RV one we're selling but it's too much money (imo) for chickens.

I also wanted to chime in on the congrats to mse on her hatch and making her own incubator. Awesome! I bet that was hard going from zero to too many and then having to choose! Each egg a potential little fuzzbutt. Your babies are cute cute cute!!

Ok, not so good news! I have lost baby after baby. I was up during the night trying to get the weak ones to drink, and I was feeding them egg mash, and wet mash from their own food.
I finally called the hatchery this morning when I saw that two more weren't going to make it, plus three more look like they will not make it. From there, I think the rest should be fine. But, she made an audible gasp, and said, sounds like you are having a straggled death rate. Wait until tomorrow, call us at any time, because they are guaranteed. I will be down to 14 chicks if these last three weak ones don't make it. I asked if they were having problems in the cold areas, and she said no. They watch the different region areas weather conditions...she was telling me because I had told her that I assumed that a heating pack would have been put in, but there wasn't one, and a lot of the babies were just standing there shivering. She asked me if I gave them any vitamins, I said yes, I have electrolytes, and she asks, you know you can wet down their mash and feed it to them, and I told her that I had done that, and I had made some egg yolk mash for them too. She said, oohh, yes that is good too. I told her I was up most of the night taking care of them. But, still losing some. That surprises me. I knew they were in shock yesterday, expected to lose some, but this is not normal. She agreed. So, will see what is up by tomorrow and call back.
Lisa, I'm not sure if I will have any Auracanas! I only have two, and I am working with them. One is stronger, and eating with the others, but not as much as I would like. The other is up at least, and is eating and drinking what I give it. I didn't order many of those, but I ordered 5 Silver Laced Wyondottes, and only have two strong ones, can see that one more isn't going to make it. Quite discouraging to say the least.
