Utah!

I use a bin, like the ones in Walmart..it sounds like you will need a large one. I put rabbit wire on top to put the lamp on top of that.

Finally saw some chicks at Cal Ranch. Oh my goodness. Poor babies. Looked so stressed, and I could see why most of them were, pasty butt!!

I saw one with the water not going into the bottom, so I turned it so the water came out. A lot of them were just standing under the "small" lamp they had in there, on the side of the bin..guess where all the chicks were? I wonder when they got them in..maybe yesterday or today.

How is everyone doing? Windy here again! This morning was warm, then all of a sudden, here came the wind, real strong too. I am wondering if our March is going to come in like a lion. If so, hope it goes out like a lamb. :))

Lisa, I saw something at Cal Ranch that we signed up for. Similar to what you do with the grocery thing. It's winderfarms though. I don't have to go anywhere to pick stuff up, they leave it on my porch..on Thursdays. I got the veggie and fruit basket that was there today..loved it! This is going to be great. I got a 20 dollar gift certificate for Cal Ranch for doing it today..just happened to be there. Plus, a free loaf of bread, and a free breakfast will be delivered with our next order. Only $5 for the cooler that they use. I don't have to order anything by a certain amount of time, just make 40 orders before I decide to cancel..could be within the next 40 years if I want. lol... They know I will use it before then. The food is guaranteed..they will take it back if we don't like it for any reason. No charge for it. Pretty neat.

Hi Brad, how are you doing? Is it windy up there where you are? I turned off my heat lamp today, and what does it say it's going to do tonight? Be colder than it's been. Oh well, I left the door to the coop open last night, so they were cooler anyway. They look to be doing ok.
Guess what I got today? I've been looking at them. An Andalusion! A splash. She has the sweetest face! I guess they lay well, are similar to leghorns, but she just got right in there and made herself at home, walked around me, wasn't afraid, but, like the leghorn, doesn't want to be picked up. She's pretty.

I ordered a brinsea ecoglow after reading a lot of reviews here. I will put some sort of wire over the top though so they can't escape. :) I was thinking about using cardboard moving boxes taped together, I looked at bins yesterday and none really seemed big enough. I don't plan on raising chicks again for a while so the cardboard boxes seem the most economical. Will they work?

Poor babies at Cal ranch :( Good thing you helped them. I have seen the Winder Farms thing, never heard feedback on it. Good to hear, I might have to check that out! Don't they deliver milk too? Congrats on your Andalusian, I want to see! White eggs, right? How old is she?

winder farms is very special and they were a big part of my childhood. they were known as winder dairy but have gone to the name winder farms. they were out of west valley for years but then people built houses around them and flipped out because they could smell cows so they moved the cows but still keep a store there and then most the land is now a cemetery. they do deliver milk and its some of the best milk you will ever drink imo. its a good local company

Oh yeah, that chocolate milk is to die for..well, good, but you know.. And the veggies I got yesterday..were so fresh.
Lisa, they do deliver up your way...I asked.

Yes, milk in all these different flavors. I only saw the reg milks..like the whole, the 1%..and the like, in half gallons. Seem to be a bit expensive for me. I drink sooo much milk. Brad is right. They gave us a free little container of skim milk to try, and it tasted better than my 1%. Not sure how they do that, but it really was good. Got some of that yummy chocolate milk, and our son got the banana milk. They have root beer milk..never have tried that.
Lisa, if you decide to go with them, mention my name, I get a special something..not sure what! lol..

I love the town Moroni, but I try to not linger there because my inner 13 year old boy wants to commit acts of vandalism on anything with the town name on it.

Kimmy, if you're not planning on raising chicks often, I'd say a cardboard box is a great way to do it.

Cynthia, glad you helped the chicks out at Cal Ranch.

Winder: My grandfather is buried in that cemetery. We ordered milk through them for a while, but we then got an idiot driver and I ended up canceling. When I signed up, they'd told me that I'd be getting milk that was extremely fresh, only a day or two old. And we did for a while- it had an expiration date of 12 days out. Then suddenly, the milk we got expired in 5-6 days, so I was annoyed- I could buy "fresher" milk by the gallon at the local health food store and it was considerably cheaper. Then, they got a new driver. Instead of putting milk in their branded cooler, he would just put it on my porch- he had to walk right past the cooler to get to the porch. He was coming at around 12:30am too, so unless I happened to hear him and could go rescue my milk, it sat outside on the porch all night long, which I am sure didn't help the longevity. I canceled a good 6 years ago, and I've been told those kinks have been worked out, but I just haven't gone back. My kids didn't seem to appreciate the higher quality (i.e. price), and I don't drink milk. We buy locally produced, hormone free milk, but I just haven't gotten on board with ordering it again.
