Utah!

Oh ya the cowgirl eggs are awesome! You have so many hatches I have a hard time remembering which are which. Those blues were the ones in the pic with a few green right? pretty pretty eggs. Envious again haha stop it!

I've been surprised at how friendly this batch of chicks has been. Last time I raised chicks, I got them when they were a couple days old. They didn't really like to be touched or interact with me at all. Once they started laying, they got much more friendly (except that white leghorn).

This batch, I come out to the coop, and they all come running right away. They're even letting me pet them, which is surprising to me- last batch definitely wouldn't have allowed it.

I'm not sure that a hatch cam will work this time. I'm going to ask about it though. I suspect there's no internet at the preschool, and if that's the case, no camera.

I've noticed a difference in a few of the feed stores, too. The Salt Lake IFA on 21st was really good about watching their chicks for the first little while that they started getting them in. I've been in there several times since, and each time, it's like they're slowly getting more lax on it. I don't know if someone was in charge that got transferred or what, but when I was in there the other day, they had a couple bins of chicks that didn't even have a sign saying what breed they were, and no one working that day knew for sure, either. I've only been to the Cal Ranch in West Jordan a couple of times, so I didn't get a great look at their conditions, though I did see some pasty bums on the chicks there. The Cal Ranch in Tooele has been stellar, from what I've seen. Been in there a few times, and there's almost always an employee within sight of the brooders. They're very good at keeping an eye on the health of the chicks and moving anyone who's sick or getting beat up to the chick ICU.

Sorry, didn't mean to write a review column. Jwoo got me excited, I guess.
If you didnt write a review, I think I would have! I just got my chickies there last week. First time doing chickens by myself, although I raised a couple with my parents years ago. I went in looking for australorps and came out with Black Sex-links apparently! And Roos at that! Luckily I got a couple of Orps and Blue Cochins, otherwise I might not end up with any girls! SO disappointed! I thought about trying to at least get my money back, but I would pay that much in gas to get out there (Im in the magna area). Thanks for the info on a better place to look for chicks next time, I really appreciate that!

Hi there! Just wanted to help with this.....if they are for sure sex links they would have to be female, those are bred so that the chicks are two colors, and the solid blacks are always female...maybe they are really Aussies but you had bad luck to get boys? Or if you got the wrong breed and they are sex links they could still be girls? Don't give up yet :)

Could they be BR? If they have a white spot on their head, that would be Barred Rock. Aussies have white chests look like penguins, Black Sex links are pretty solid black.

Thanks for the help! Their "Austalorps" were much older than the other chicks there (my first "duh" moment-Roosters are probably the last to go!) and wern't solid black, which makes me believe they arent black stars. Their feathering is coming in with thick penciling but its more black than white, which I heard is charectoristic of males.
Either way, well hang on to them until they "cock a doodle"! Besides, their freaking cute in the meantime!
And if they do end up going to another farm, that means I get to go pick out *four* new chicks to replace the two...right?

Did you go to the IFA on 21st? If so, I think I know which babies you are talking about. Those are the same ones I was looking at, and at first I thought they might be SLW, but their legs weren't pink so I figured they were Australorps. I'll take a picture of the BSL chick I got for my mom and upload it here for you to compare with as soon as my computer's up and running. I've got it halfway rebuilt now, so I'm hoping it will be this weekend, heh. There's never enough time.

chickenundercover, if you do go get more chicks and want help trying to pick out girls, let me know and maybe I can meet you there? I'm getting better and figuring out which chicks are girls and which are boys. There's a looooot of helpful pointers on this forum.

Cynthia - Love those babies! That little splash is very cute looking. I hope you get some girls out of this batch - that you keep!

RedIII-
Yup, thats the one! The chicks I got also had a dark wash to their legs. I dont know if I will be getting any more chicks this season, I need to get the coop done first! But thank you so much for the offer! Totally know what you mean, I need SO much more time! Here's a pic of one of my mystery gals, she's (he?!) is the black one in the middle. We named them all after Beatles songs, and this one is "Lady Madonna" for the time being. You know, for girly parts luck :)

Oh the chicken math lol! yes you are absolutely right :)

Was just looking at that pic---my two cents here-----BR or dominique maybe? Lots on here that could take a good stab at that one....maybe cuckoo something or other? The stripes sure look like my BR hen did when it was little. I think the dark wash on legs is often female? But the rounded back wing tips are confusing..or is there a tiny pointed tip on there that blends in the pic......it is feathering out fast that is usually female....good size tail/female......cannot see the comb....there that is all my confusing input haha! I think it is def worth the wait. Good luck I am crossing fingers for you!

Oh, they are gorgeous! I can't decide which coloration I like better, but dang they are super cute!

Here are my latest. You can see how some look like they have blue and black in them, the black running down the middle.
My splashes made it, just took them a while. One has more markings on it, the one in the middle has dark in the little wing tips already.
Oh OH! How did that penguin get in there??! lol...
Puffy sweet cheeks...and bums :)My one all blue..and you can see the top of the one that is probably a splash
Pretty coloring, but they change so much. Wonder what this little one will do..splash?
Fluffy, puffy babies...love them. Nice slate legs. Lisa, these are siblings to the splash you took. These came from the gal that replaced them when I got a chipmunk..they were all supposed to be BBS Pure A. These are, check out those little slate legs. No chipmunks here. No tiny tots. They show their birds, and when they heard what I got in my first hatch, had to fix it. Sounds like I got one that was right though..the one you got. Does it have puffy cheeks? Some of these aren't as puffy as others, and that's how it works..some are considered better for show than others. I am still wanting that green egg, and I'm not sure that the black one outside~~may even lay an egg!! That tail!

Can you really tell in week one or two by the feathers? How accurate is that? Four of my six have feathers on their wings. The silkie is hard to tell because it's feathers are coming in so drastically different. My braham just has a little on the tips of the wings. So by that I have four ladies one boy and a ???
