Oh Brad, I'm so sorry. There is no such thing as saying, he was, or she was..."just" this or "just" that, when it comes to pets. No matter what type of pet, it hurts to lose them when you love them the way you did your parrot. And you are right, young for that age in a Parrot..but right again, no pain for that little one anymore. He was so lucky to have found you for those last few years. I know you loved him. I know how you are with your pets. They are very lucky indeed to have you taking care of them. You commit. You give them all you have when it comes to loving and caring. I hope that knowing this little one is not in pain any longer gives you at least a bit of peace of mind in losing a friend. I wish I was there to give you a real hug!

Looked up the arrival date on the Pencils from Dick H. I got them on Jan 19th, but they were already a day or two old..so were hatched around mid Jan. Coming up on 4 months next month!

Birdman, so so sad for you. But glad you are being as positive as you can be about it, somethings you just have to roll with it really sucks when there is just nothing you can do but hang in there.....ugh!

Speaking of not such great news----Sasha----I just candled these crele eggs. They are thinning out a lot faster than what I was hoping! The clears that I was unsure about at the last candling were all still clear... a dang lots of infertile eggs in this batch. Also way too many quit----there were several bacterial/blood rings. Would this have anything to do with the poop? I have no idea.... I have nine left that look like they should---5 of which have really wonky L-ish shaped air cells, they will stay in and we will cross our fingers like mad!!! sheesh!!! I could visibly see 5 wiggling, the four with normal air cells and 1 with an L-shaped. Anyway all 9 would hatch!?? Pray girl, pray! I am so sorry, I wish more were making it to lockdown. These are tough eggs

I have decided I HATE shipped eggs. So unpredictable. How many left do you have for lockdown so far?

Lastly--when should we go into lockdown. Where they come a little early sometimes--- you decide what time of what day to start.

Any advice/input from Sphinx and Cynthia12 would be
a happy thing!

Brad, I am so sorry for the loss of your African Gray. That would be so difficult, especially with as much time and effort as you put into building your relationship. I'm glad he had a peaceful and happy last few years. Too bad he didn't get more time with you.

Lockdown: I have a tough time with it- My brinsea has a turning auto setting, and it'll automatically stop turning for lockdown. But, it seems to stop turning later than I think it ought to. For example, I set my latest batch of eggs around 2pm on a Thursday. By my reckoning, I should go into lockdown at 2pm Monday. But it seems like my brinsea wants me to keep turning until Tuesday. Cynthia & Donna, what say you?


Red, I'd loooooove to see pictures of those three boys. I think it'd be awesome if I were wrong and one was a girl, but I felt pretty confident in their boyishness.

These eggs are bantams---saw several comments on them hatching a day or even two early so wondering if lockdown should start a little early. Sad these eggs are not doing very good. I think she ordered 24 but with extras there were 32----she kept 8, I kept 24----I thought I would get at least a dozen but there were over 1 dozen infertile, now we are down to 9 little teensy eggs in mine! Man I hope some hatch I feel so bad already I have really followed the book on these....no unplugged bators this time, temps have been perfect. I wondered if I should have hand turned them....because they are so little I do not know how much "tipping" the turner does....I think if I ever hatch banty eggs again I will hand turn on their sides. Likely no bantams for me though I am sticking to LF. I do not have the patience for the broody part I like my eggs too much They are so stinking cute I see why people like them though!

My splash from my Blue wyandotte hatch is getting frizzled feathers. How can that be? Does it happen randomly sometimes? Or is it a consequence of having the bator unplugged all night I cannot get very good pics of it...you can kind of see it here. Bluejems came over with her fam this weekend and I was showing them---it really looks frizzled. It gets more and more this way every time I look at it!

Thanks Cynthia, yes I believe you are correct they are called "Straw Mites" harmless to chicks but just plain nasty! They give me the heebies and I fee like they are crawling all over me.. yulkie. I might switch to alfalfa and pine much better for the compost pile anyway. I surely appreciate your help.

Elk, after observing where the broody hen has taken up residence and how long she's avoided notice, I have kind of left her alone so that her location is more discreet. She set up shop in a good spot that's away from most of the raccoon traffic, so at this point, I'm hoping she can make it the remaining week-and-a-half without predators finding her. I just go through nervous mommy moments every night, is all, lol. To be honest, I can't think of any sturdy shelter that I could set up quickly, either at night or when she's away from the nest for a moment. I'm sorry to hear about what happened with your broody's eggs. That's so hard

I hope you can get something done with some of those bantam eggs. Wouldn't that be fun?

Quite honestly, I can't believe I found my way back to this post. My inbox has over 500 unread msgs...I've been moving my sister both days this wkend.

As for chickens.... we have a silkie and the blue Americauna (sp?) that went broody this wk. They are on banty EE/Americauna eggs with a banty EE roo, and we have a silkie setting on full size EE eggs (with a EE banty roo). Both these girls are in big dog crate in the hen house (door shut) and appear to be loving it. They have food & water with them. The true Americauna is happy....we have a picture of another hen on top of her trying to lay her own egg lol. Hopefully they'll be something out the clutch for both to love. My daughter marked the date and hatching is a couple days apart so we will watch close but right now the two are happy to be by each other.

I'm still hoping I can enter the ChickenStock egg raffle... wouldn't that be fun?! I spaced and thought it wasn't for another month so sadly I work and we can't go but just maybe someone on this board in Utah can win something fun!

Lisa, that would make sense to me if the frizzle trait can randomly occur like that. After all, it had to come from somewhere for people to start breeding it, right?

how old are our pencils cynthia? i have been busy extending my garden, i am doing cattle panels for the fence, its thick wire and will hold up vines well, had to go to the salt lake ifa to get the panels and as we were paying i saw a little mini lop rabbit with the cutest face ever, well seeing how i have a double hutch and only one rabbit and with my mom wanting to get a small rabbit i pointed her out to my dad and he took one look at her and told the lady we wanted her lol. so now we have two rabbits. i lost one of my parrots last night, he was a congo african grey parrot named mithrandir. he went through hell in life, he was a wild caught so they went and stole him from his family and literally packed him like a sardine and took him to a world he did not know to live in a cage and abused by a lot of people. he was over 30 years old and he died young. i rescued him a few years ago, at the time he hated all humans and would attack them leaving them a bloody mess, well me and him learned trust and grew to love each other, i was able to hold and kiss him, its something people said would never happen but we proved them wrong. mithrandir had some neurological issues where he would often have seizures, he had a issues walking at time and had a ton of other issues, they were not something we could cure sadly. so as hard as it is to lose him, its a good thing too because now he is free, free of the pain this world caused, he is more happy now. anyway rest in peace mithrandir, i will miss you and always love you. its so hard to loose a pet and it hurts even more when they die so young

i know he was a parrot but i think you all understand what i am feeling. i was up late laying him to rest, i plan to plant a burning bush next to him because in the fall it will turn the color of his tail

I had a Meyers for 5 yrs and rehomed him to a guy that could spend more time (and they 'clicked' just when he came to first see). So I know how hard it was to lose him (through my horse rescue loss) and understand how you develop such a bond with a bird. The african grey's are extremely smart birds and he was so lucky to have you as his human in the last years of his life. Lucky him and lucky you for having him.

He'll be waiting across Rainbow Bridge for ya!

Fun you are having with those girls! Hey you have not posted about your progress on your run....you better hustle ha ha they are getting big so fast! Love love love the color of your EE's feathers...very unique. She is a beautiful girl.

The frizzle thing is sure cute. I already told that Colorado guy he could have her/him. Now I was wishing I could keep it. I did not keep any from that hatch---this one is the sibling to your Stevie and Angel. So it is probably a good thing I sold it first or the chicken math would be going again. I am proud of myself, my chicken math is going backwards for once!! Oh ya you asked about that splash---BlueJems has it now---I could not fit it in with the ages I have here, mine are either way older or baby chicks....it would hurt the baby chicks when I tried that, and the big girls ran that poor thing ragged. So blujems is going to grow it out and see what gender. She has some closer to that size, and separate pens I think it will be much happier with her. And it was best friends with her little feminine rooster. It got a cut/toenail snag on its toe when it was dashing all over the run but it sounds like it is doing better.
