Utah!

Definitely, they are super cute babies, but I have about 10 here, 16 in the Franken-bator, and 7 with the broody hen. I'll probably hatch more once I clear out the grow-out pens, but I still have Joel's Welsummer chicks coming and those eggs I won. Ack. Does anyone want Lemon Orpingtons?

Lisa... I moved Fonzie today...into his own pen with my two new wheaten blues from Bonnie.. he was doing fine in with the big girls and my BLRW roo but the two pullets spent all their time hiding from the mean old hens so I decided to move them into their own pen... Now I need a few more girls for him.. LOL

I'll try and remember to take the camera out on Saturday and get some pictures..

Aw The Fonz--how sweet. Bet he likes hanging out with a couple his own size. They have to be pretty close in age....he was born 2/1. I bet he will make pretty babies. Maybe next year I can buy one from you :)! Funny Potsie the pullet likes hanging with mine from Bonnie too. It is all working out here too I think. She finally ate today and quit moping around :)

Ah! I'm so sorry I didn't notice his pasty bum! I literally worked outside all day long, and came inside just long enough to shower, grab the chicks and head out the door. I promise I would have cleaned him up if I'd seen it. :( BUT, it was nice to meet you, too. :) We picked up our new goats, hit the Ogden IFA for a few things then brought them home to get them settled. They are SO stinking cute. It was too dark outside to take decent pictures so I'll get some tomorrow.
I'm not feeling so hot tonight so I'm off to bed early. g'night, all.

Okay! So I got to meet Sasha and her daughter

It was fun to say hi to you two! Thank you again for helping with the Chicken Shuttle, haha. And thank you, too, Lisa!

So I loooove these babies! (Well, I love all my babies) Oh my word, these Icelandics are so darling and tiny. I've already named the suspected girl Gerti, and the suspected boy Sven. I'm just so excited to have them. Thanks, Birdguy!

I noticed when I picked up the babies that Sven had a pasty bum. When I got him home, I was worried about him. He seemed very lethargic and wasn't standing up or using his one leg much. I thought, "Oh no, is this what spraddle leg looks like?" Well, first things first, I dipped his little beak into the water dish a couple of times and made sure he got a drink, then got a warm n' wet rag to clean his vent. It was plugged good.

Sven mostly slept in my hand while I worked on him, and after a few minutes, he kind of woke up and gave this little "Chip chip!" Out came a load of poo, and I cleaned it off right away. It was white and smelled strange, so I imagine it had been stuck for a bit. I kept cleaning him off, and he gave me another really good round of poo, at which point I had to get a new rag. I got his bum cleaned all the way off, daubed on some balm, and then made sure he got a drink of the new vitamin water I'd refilled their bottle with.

He's now walking around in the brooder and chirping more, picking at things, and even eating some food. He still seems kind of wobbly, so I'll be keeping a close eye on him for the next couple of days, but I can already tell that he's feeling a lot better. Phew! Glad I caught that when I did. Sometimes these things just happen, and I'm glad I could help my baby.

Sasha, no worries at all! I understand that things come up. I'm just very happy that I was able to catch it when I did and take care of him. I hope you feel better in the morning, too.

Lisa, yes, I'm fairly sure that you were right - one boy, one girl. They're feathering out differently, so that's hopeful.

Okay, and here is my insane-hour-of-the-morning report for all the lovely forum folks:

Went and looked a bit for the broody Marans, found that she is MIA from her nest and the eggs there. Found some shell fragments, too, and there weren't as many eggs as I expected, so I think she has some chicks somewhere. I'll have to look for them in the daylight, when I can. And get pictures, because I remember birdman really wanted to see them

I also found one of the dud eggs in the nest that was double-shelled. It was the weirdest thing, one hard shell right on top of another. I could hear that there was something inside, so I decided to crack it open. Lesson learned: If you think an egg is rotten, for the sake of your sanity, DO NOT break it open on the back porch. Huge duh.

I checked on Sven a little bit ago (it's the wee hours of the morning right now) and the little guy is doing so much better! He was just as lively as Gerti and walking normally, so far as I could see. I had to put those two in their own box with the light on them, for a few reasons. One was that I was afraid Sven would get trampled; another reason was that Gerti kept picking fights with the older girls. It was pretty funny to see. She's a spunky girl.

Well Mike went out and watched the chickens for awhile and He thinks that the blue splash wheaton is a hen. So I guess it is a wait and see.
The green ones are ee's-- the slate ones (kind of dark gray like the Aussies) are usually Am, if that helps. I am probably not helping with the confusion haha! I had an Am chick from a breeder but the legs turned out green, because the roo next door got in the pen and messed up the chicks lol
That hen sparkles legs are dark, Not sure of a color at the moment. I was to dizzy to try and get up close and personal with her last night. Mike said he thought they were a gray when she was younger. So I don't know for sure. will have to check when I am not so out of it.

Okay.. I have a few questions..

In salt lake county.. does anyone know how much the fee is?

Also, do i really have to provide all neighbors with a written notice that i will be keeping chickens?

Do I really have to have animal services come out and inspect everything before i can have a permit?

Has anyone else ever taken the risk of not buying the permit?..

By the way.We just bought our first chicks last night!!!! woot woot..! Took the wife and kids to cal-ranch last night. It was fun. Below are the pics and names of the chicks..

jf..not sure about all of that in your count..the one that can probably answer that question would be Shinx.

I have to say, I am thinking that you have boys and girls..meaning, your own sons and daughters. Or one of each, just by the names given..cute!

Looks like you got, I'm guessing the first one..a red sex link? The second one is a Rhode Island Red..the third is a barred rock, and the fourth one is a..BO...then a black sex link..then a Silver Laced Wyondotte? How right was I? You have some good laying hens coming up!! Have fun..I can't imagine having to write a letter to neighbors!!

Cynthia-

You were pretty close.. 2 Rhode Island reds 1 Golden sexlink, 1 black sexlink, 1 Barred rock and 1 silver laced.

yeah my two oldest named 4 of them.. my 6 year old named Sara and Melissa and as you can guess the boy named mader and mcqueen

(daughter 6 son 3, daughter 6 months)

Your new babies are very cute, JesusFreak! Are you in unincorporated Salt Lake County, or are you in one of the official cities? If you're in a different town (say, South Salt Lake, West Valley, West Jordan, etc), your rules would be different. If it is unincorporated SL, here's a link to ordinances: http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=16602&stateId=44&stateName=Utah

But, to sum up:

1- only female ducks and chickens, or chicks or either gender.

2- keep it clean

3- get a permit and pay an applicable fee. An inspection of your coop may happen.

4- keep chickens in your fenced yard (in enclosed coop at night), and not in front yard

5- Don't slaughter chickens, sell eggs, or breed for commercial purposes

6- between 3-8 hens allowed, depending on zoning
