Whoaaa, Cynthia! Look at that bum on the left in the first pic! That one looks pretty girly. The one right up front in the second picture looks like a strapping young chap. Harder to tell with the one in the middle of the second picture, though.

Sphinx, don't feel like a failure. If that parrot was attacking everyone, it makes me think that somehow he was feeling upset or threatened, so maybe he just needed to start over clean slate. Who knows what was going through his head? I think it's good you found him another home where he could be cared for. I have a friend whose mom loves animals and tends to get a variety of them. She once had two very beautiful cockatoos, but my friend hated them because they were loud. One of them would chase my friend down the hall and nip at her because she knew my friend wasn't fond of the birds. This friend would commonly yell, "Shut UP, bird!" I guess she didn't find it nearly as humorous as I did when the bird starting saying back, "Sh'up, bird! Sh'up, bird!"

I'm familiar with Blue and Golds and Military macaws, but not the others. I love the look of those Militaries. They're so pretty. In my dream world, I would have a large outdoor enclosure that I could put birds like that in so that they have plenty of space and fresh air. Sigh..........

And heck yeah, I'd love to get some feathers from ya!

CYnthia, how could you tell that your chick was ok? I checked on this one this morning, and it just didn't seem quite right.


Brad's right, parrots are soooooo much more work. We had a blue faced amazon for a while. However, he *hated* my one daughter. Really hated her. If we had him out in the front room, he would attack her if she came in the room. He got lonely and upset if we kept him in my son's room. We finally had to rehome him because he started attacking everyone but my son and I. We gave him to a guy in Spanish Fork who keeps him in his store during the day. A few months after we gave him up, we went to visit him. We walked in the room, and he got one look at me and attacked. I guess he blamed me for the disruption? I still have scars on my arm from it because I didn't want to hurt him when he latched on. What was interesting is most of the phrases we taught him, he never said again for the new owner. He said completely new things we never heard, like "Wake up Stupid!!!". He used to say "I love you" all day long to us, but the new guy has said he's never heard that come out of the bird. I still feel like a failure because we gave him up, but really, it came down to my kids' safety.

i did not see this until now. yeah parrots tend to pick a person and will be very protective, its how i got my meyers, my sis got her and she fell in love with me and would attack anyone else that came near so she became my bird lol and meyers are small little parrots. 'zons get very moody and are not for everyone, so she fell in love with your son and saw him as her mate and was very protective, its kinda sweet if you think about it. reading body language is very important with parrots. and parrots can bite very hard, most of mine could take a finger off me easy if they wanted too. parrots will hate people for a lot of reasons, in the past people who looked like you could of hurt them so when they see you they hate you, parrots may not like a color you are wearing and they also have types, like some hate all blondes lol. also your body language will make them attack. know a typical parrot will be rehomed 5+ times in their life, and most parrots live to be around a 100 years old. education is a must with parrots and we need people to do a lot of it before they get one and the sad thing is most parrots are impulse buys. parrots will take advantage of fear and when they bite you you can not pull away because then they will use that to get you away from them. also do you know why so many pirates had eye patches? it was because of parrots lol.

cockatoos are crazy, i am not a fan of them and have only liked three cockatoos that i have met in my life. my parrots sing drinking songs lol. if you want to see a cool bird, look up hyacinth macaws, they are the largest breed of parrot you can buy and baby ones normally go for around $20k...

Brad, Our parrot liked both me AND my son. However, when we rehomed him, I was the one who actually did most of the work, so I'm betting he associated me with the trauma of being moved. He always got along great with me until 6 months after he'd been in his new home and we came to visit. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but when he attacked me, I cried because it hurt my feelings so much.

Cynthia, I haven't taken the tape off yet. I'm not sure that he's holding his leg in on his own yet. I'm going in tomorrow morning and will take off the tape then. If he keeps it in, I'll leave it alone. If the leg still slides out, I'll retape for the weekend. I have a bad feeling about it. I'm hoping I did it right.

Brad, yes, Hyacinth macaws are sooooo pretty! It's cool that they are so huge, too. Aren't they endangered pretty badly because of poaching, though? I think if I were to get a parrot, I would look at something smaller and more manageable. I don't care about the vocab or color, when it comes down to it. I'd go for personality.

Oh, I didn't know the tape wasn't off yet..but still, give it a chance..about half a day, without the tape, before you decide to put it back on. It really does look like they are still having a problem..but if it is still pushing that leg out by the end of the day..put the tape back on. You could still even wait for the next morning to see..because they are still young. Not sure you would be around it at night?

nearly all parrots are having trouble in the wild, people steal them from the wild, from there native land and family and pack them like sardines and ship them all over the world my congo was a wild caught... what they go through is so horrible. cites has slowed the importation of protected animals in cites member nations but it still happens. they were even still importing them into the us in the 80s... look up liniolated parakeets, they are small parrots about the size of a budgie (budgies are always called parakeets) they are not loud, they are funny little clowns that do talk and will cuddle and hide in your hair. or you can go with something like a meyers parrot like i have, they are super fun. forgive me everyone if me talking about parrots bugs you, i can get a little carried away at times lol.

It really does look like they are still having a problem..but if it is still pushing that leg out by the end of the day..put the tape back on. You could still even wait for the next morning to see..because they are still young. Not sure you would be around it at night?

Well, since it's not my chick, I have extremely limited access to it, maybe from 8am-3:30pm, and then not on the weekend.

I think I'll take off the tape first thing, and at 1:25, when school gets out, I'll see how he's doing, and possibly retape. I don't know. My last attempt at this didn't end well.
