Utah!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but I have already had some correspondence with "La Casa de Pollo" and Sasha. I live in Cache Valley, and I have mostly ducks (Runner, Welsh Harlequin, and Cayuga), but I also have 8 RIR chickens. I'm in the market for some muscovies, and maybe a few good tempered geese. We also have 3 goats, 2 wethers and a female born a couple of months ago. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say "Hello." I have often used BYC as a reference, but never started posting, until now.

Hello All,
Dave

Dave..behind in the times here..sorry! Whenever I get a chance..I like to show off the only ducks I decided to hatch..and they are pretty ducks for sure. Do these babies look familiar?

Little Welsh Harlequins! I love their little feet! You must have a large piece of land to have so many ducks, geese, goats, and chickens..and..I always say, no fair when I hear of all the fun critters other people have. I am happy with my chickens though, and having fun hatching different types of chickens and seeing the different types of looks, personalities..and I've even hatched a couple of turkeys..for the fun of it for a guy. They were really cute when born, could hardly stay up on their tummies..they were too fat from all that yolk. They kept rolling over, then screaming for help, then happy again after I came and put them on their tummies. This went on for a while on the fist day. They make cute noises when small, not sure about when they get older! :))

YeS! It is going to be hard to part with them though. They are so fun because they just lay their little fluffy heads on each other and snuggle in a big pile. It is fun to have such a big group of them :) Hattie, we have a date Tuesday right? I cannot wait to see the new polish babies!! If I send two more little hitch hikers with you to IF would that be ok---Daloorashens is wanting two and you guys could meet up when you get into town :D Love the chicken shuttle. I won't be headed to IF for a few more weeks. I have no way of knowing if they are wheaten or blue wheaten yet, they will all look the same for a few weeks so I hope it does not matter :) I am growing the rest out until I can tell gender, then will have hopefully a few started pullets :ya If anybody wants a cockerel from these let me know. Whatever boys I get will need a new home in a month or two.

Cynthia the duck pictures are so fun. After staring at chicken beaks for so long they just look so crazy! I did have ducks, but they just made a huge mess, did not have an area to confine them in. We had ours from spring to fall.....what do you guys do with them in the winter with no water for them to play in, do you keep them in a coop? Just curious what you would do with them in case we go on that adventure again.

I may even be done with it soon, still on the fence trying to decide if I am gettting those free eggs with my gift cert. I won at Chickenstock.... I am thinking one dozen Black Australorp eggs and one dozen Delawares, maybe.....

*jams fingers in ears and hums loudly*

Dang, I'm gone for a couple of days, and this thread explodes! You guys are having too much fun talking about chicks and ducks and goats and trading..............wow.

Welcome to our newcomers! Just to warn you, we're nuts on this thread, but once we've infected you, you'll fit right in

We have a lot of fun here, and the more, the merrier.

Sphinx, I'm glad you got that partridge. She's very pretty!

Cynthia, since my boyfriend has turkeys, I can tell you that they still make cute noises when they're a bit older
big_smile.png
But man, they are LOUD! The pair he has are almost as big as my biggest chicks, which are 3-4 months old. The boyfriend thinks they are both girls, just by looking at their faces and necks. They're sure sweet. We can still get the bigger one to fall asleep in our hands.

Sasha, guess what? Those two little Icelandics you and Lisa transported for me are doing great! We noticed that Sven's (the one that had pasty bum) wings were drooping quite a bit, so I gave them some vitamins. When that didn't do anything, I took them off the vits and gave them some medicated feed for a few days. That did the trick! Sven is catching up with Gerti now in growth rate, and he's getting so energetic. His wings don't droop and he's getting leggier. I'm so happy to have these two. Thanks again Sasha, Lisa, and Birdguy (I feel kind of funny not knowing your name, but knowing theirs, lol)

So, I don't know why I even bother reporting on this any more, but that raccoon showed up again and took one of the cockerels I got from Sphinx. I wonder if we're going to see more of it now that it's wiped out the neighbor's flock? We're still trying methods to catch it. I am very eager to get my hands on that thing and make me a new hat

My EE roo is now in the penitentiary run with my Marans and her babies (he was getting grumpy without his woman) and we're keeping a close eye on the two remaining cockerels. The one that got eaten was the one that looked the closest to an actual GLW. The two remaining boys are very obviously muttskies. Oh, and I got a better look at the three chicks yesterday. Lisa, you were right, one of those barred ones is a boy, but I can't tell if it was the original one I thought was a girl or not. The other barred chick and the black chickie both look like girls so far. They've sure got a good mama. I watched her call the chicks into the coop last night, then get out and check the perimeter to make sure everything was okay before she got inside with them.

Why am I still awake? My pillow is going to beat me if I keep coming home late like this. Bah.

And to Utah! thread

Hey Sphinx, Yeah, the hatch is finished. :( There were no more pips, no movement, no sound, and since the other 5 were already fluffed up, I was suspicious, so I took an egg out and into a heated, steam-filled bathroom. Tapped a few times with the end of the tweezers and heard nothing. popped a little hole in the air cell, no response. picked a couple little pieces of shell off to really see into the egg....saw a dead chick. :( So one by one, I did eggtopsies on the rest. I didn't candle before lockdown and probably should have. 3 looked like they died right before lockdown, the rest during early lockdown. I don't get it. I'm blaming the super cheap, unreliable incubator I bought. (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Lisa, your Ameraucana babies are too cute for words!

Sasha, congrats on the ones that made it. Adorable. I am wondering about the eggs we have. I have 4 that look good so far. and there are 4 that are still in but don't look quite right. and 4 are gone. I am wondering if something is up with the chickens and eggs from there. Not much good luck with those eggs.

Lisa OMG what a cute pile. I can't wait to see what they look like. What a good hatch you had.
