Utah!

Ok I will try. I thought the toes that curled in were fixable but i did not know about these, they look awful. And Blue lays dark too? That is awesome! I thought the black laid darker. Now I have to hope she is a she. Does not look as boyish as the other one, but will do that feather check and see. Crossies

Thanks for the info

Will get out that electrical tape, I have seen you write about that.....cut the strips in half lengthwise, right? This ones toes are lots smaller than the other one.

Good luck with the wriggle worm. :)

Holy cow you are not kidding! That baby was very wriggly :) Got it done though. Thanks for the help! S/he sure looks blue....but I can see a darker more blackish center on the back though, it will be fun to see how it turns out. I am just ecstatic I actually got a live Marans chick out of the egg.Out of two batches of 6 eggs each, finally two live chicks. Finally :) I think I may have two boys though. This last one is a little less obvious....so maybe.....but feeling a masculine vibe in my newbies.

i am alive :D yesterday we lost a dog we have had for 12+ years, the dog was like my moms shadow so its been very hard for her. then we had a drain on our main sprinkler line that i realized when i walked into the new part of the garden and sunk down into the mud and saw a river running. but hey we got it fixed. we have had horrible sprinkler problems the last two years. the insurance is working with us on the basement flooding but we will still have to seal the foundation our self and i am hopeing we can just do it on the inside so we do not have to dig down by hand 8 feet... but i am doing good. this heat we have been having is killing me, i get sick if its too hot and/or humid

Ok I will take a stab at this.....the boys tend to have broader comb areas, sometimes even down the beak a bit. The legs tend to be thicker. After a few days, the stature can be slightly different, boys stand up a bit taller girls lean more forward. Sometimes when you put yourhand in the brooder theboys tend to stand up defensive like, the girls often skitter away. After they are two days ish old, if you want to try and feather sex them, there is a difference in how the wing feathers are coming in. Sphinx posted a good picture of this once, I do not have it, hoping she can put the pic up for you. This only works on certain breeds, Ameraucanas not so much. Also, the girls tend to get tails first, they stand up a little taller, wing feathers slightly longer a little earlier. The differences are all quite subtle but if you spend enough time staring at these buggers it really starts to show. Also if you just have one chick it is hard to tell, but if you hatch several you compare them to each other and some will have the boyish tendencies and some will have the girly tendencies....and there are always a few stubborn ones in the middle that you cannot be too sure of lol. I swear, when I look at their little faces, there is something that just seems different between the sexes....hard to explain...their demeanor is just slightly different as well. The girls just seem a little sweeter. The boys seem a little busier, even a little more mad? maybe? I do not know how to explain it any better. Hope that helps!

Thank you. I am going out and looking at my chicks I put under the broody hen and see if I can tell. Also I had a Polish pullet that was 9 weeks die yesterday. I went out in the afternoon and she was laying dead by the feeder. I'm wondering if she choked on the food, It was crumbles sold by IFA Broke my heart, She was my husbands favorite.

Lisa you have chicks! So sorry about the one dying. Hate that. The last little one I hope wrapping the toes will help it. Poor little GIRL.

Girlie vibes coming your way.

Thanks for all the posts on sexing chicks. Now I just need some chicks to try it on. I was looking at SashaT chicks (very cute little littles I might add) are there 4 girls? The second picture being a boy? How bad did I guess?

Red when I was in Idaho I saw the bird guys Icelandics. They are all so different I couldn't tell which chickens were which. I'm trying to remember if his had any topknots. He had so many chickens and goats and a HUGE pig. It was fun to see. His barn was awesome.

Sphinx great idea on the carpet. Does it matter what kind. Hope that isn't a dumb question. Most likely it is.

Does it need to be outdoor carpeting because mine scratch around. I have some short shag carpeting laying around. Just wondering because that is a great idea.
Cynthia I hope I am doing everything right with this incubator. It needs water about everyday. I have the eggs in a egg carton and was wondering do I need to have holes in the bottom so the eggs can breath? I have just been turning them side to side like Lisa says she does hers. I'm excited yours are going into lockdown because we will get more baby pics!

We should all really stagger our hatches so we will always have someone hatching chicks don't you think? Then we could live vicariously through one another's hatchings.

Good idea about the staggering Hattie lol!
I am thinking Sasha has 2 boys. 3 poss. Probably 2 though....Sasha what do you think?

Oh She is headed uptown then stopping over that is right! Do you have BYC on yer phone Sasha?
Hattie I have cute little dime size holes in the bottom. the recyclable newspaper ish kind (not styro). The first hatch I did not and it went pretty good. Either tip the eggs themselves really good or if you do the whole carton make sure it is keeping the high end away from the element if it is a still air :)

bird man- so sorry to hear all that is happening at your place! Not fun stuff. I hope the insurance company comes through for you. Sorry about your dog. That is a hard thing to have happen.

Sundancenbare- What on earth could have made your little Polish die. Sorry to hear about that.

Cynthia I once clean my mother in laws linoleum floor with straight ammonia and a brush. It looked brand new after. I'm surprised I'm not dead. Seriously. Not sure I would recommend it. It is probably better to get a new floor.

That sounds like a fuuuun hatch

Ok guys, help me out here. Never had toe issues. (on baby chicks anyway)
This last Marans came out, and had to help a little. Was scared after the other one died......this one has one foot that is not right the toes curl upward and dont bend in, two toes mostly. Like if s/he tried to stand the toenails would not touch the ground because the toe curves up. Will a boot work for that? I hope it is something I can fix. I can check with Speckled....wondering if you guys know? I also just realized this chick is totally blue, not black

Try to ignore my coop builders thumb. I have hammered that thing way too many times this spring!
question? what happens if you do nothing? Would they get worse. better? just curious.

Lisa, you posted while I was writing my book. You have marans!! Congrats..but sorry about losing one sooo close to hatching.

I'm with Shinx on waiting to sex them.. they come with swollen feet and bellies. Tomorrow, I'll bet you will be able to see those wings, stuby, a boy. Long and fluffy more than likely a girl, but you know how it works..you never know for sure with this wing guessing, but that seems to work pretty good.
Your two you sent me, look to be girls. One looks like a wheaton, and one a blue W. Very pretty.
Post more pictures tomorrow. Then we can guess away!

What book are you writing?
