Utah!

bird man- so sorry to hear all that is happening at your place! Not fun stuff. I hope the insurance company comes through for you. Sorry about your dog. That is a hard thing to have happen.

Sundancenbare- What on earth could have made your little Polish die. Sorry to hear about that.

Cynthia I once clean my mother in laws linoleum floor with straight ammonia and a brush. It looked brand new after. I'm surprised I'm not dead. Seriously. Not sure I would recommend it. It is probably better to get a new floor.

Ooo, yeah, not with the way my throat is now, I would be coughing and coughing. I have noticed, that I can't handle strong detergent things now..but guess what I have discoverd? Dawn! They have so many ways to use it, and I was having the hardest time getting my big black mirror in the living room clean, because, I used the leather cleaner on the big leather part of the mirror. Well, it smeared all over. Then I got an email on Dawn. I thought, it's just like any other dish soap. I tried it on my mirror, and it is the best it's looked since I used that leather cleaner about a year and a half ago. I am going to try it on my bathroom floor. Yaay!

I have never used cartons to hatch. Lisa sent a reply for you..that's good.
Yes, you will have to keep putting water in, #1 reason, you have the air vents open, and it's a forced air..dries it out faster. # 2 reason, you aren't putting much in to begin with, keeping it down to the low or mid 30's. Or, I guess there is a #4 reason, it will evaporate faster because there is less when you open it to turn eggs. That's ok, it's worth it, especially with shipped eggs. Do you candle? The best way to know if your humidity is right, is to watch the air sac. There are a lot of places that show where your air sac should be and when. If the air sac is getting too big too fast..put a bit more humidity in there..not much, just about 5 percent for a while. I candle at 4 or 5 days. Dark eggs you can see better at 10. So, 5 days, then 10, then lock down time. That's what I do, unless I see something that seemed off when I candled on the other days, then I may wait a couple of days, then candle again, but I usually do those three if everything is looking good. I hatched the Welsummers and Exchequers in that one. Well let's be honest here..I've hatched a lot of chicks in there.

Hope it works well for you too. Don't worry about opening it too much at this point. It's ok. Probably best for them.

Ok I will take a stab at this.....the boys tend to have broader comb areas, sometimes even down the beak a bit. The legs tend to be thicker. After a few days, the stature can be slightly different, boys stand up a bit taller girls lean more forward. Sometimes when you put yourhand in the brooder theboys tend to stand up defensive like, the girls often skitter away. After they are two days ish old, if you want to try and feather sex them, there is a difference in how the wing feathers are coming in. Sphinx posted a good picture of this once, I do not have it, hoping she can put the pic up for you. This only works on certain breeds, Ameraucanas not so much. Also, the girls tend to get tails first, they stand up a little taller, wing feathers slightly longer a little earlier. The differences are all quite subtle but if you spend enough time staring at these buggers it really starts to show. Also if you just have one chick it is hard to tell, but if you hatch several you compare them to each other and some will have the boyish tendencies and some will have the girly tendencies....and there are always a few stubborn ones in the middle that you cannot be too sure of lol. I swear, when I look at their little faces, there is something that just seems different between the sexes....hard to explain...their demeanor is just slightly different as well. The girls just seem a little sweeter. The boys seem a little busier, even a little more mad? maybe? I do not know how to explain it any better. Hope that helps!

Ok so I went outside and looked at my chicks. It was a bit hard as the momma Silkie was very unhappy with me picking up her babies and everytime I put one back in she would peck me. She has 4 polish chicks 3 are black with white tops one is a gold lace. She also has a black bantam cochin and a mystery blue chick. I may be crazy but they all look like girls to me. hope its not wishful thinking. I then looked at the three chicks under my bantam Rhode Island Red. She has two blue Langshams and a ye;;pw chick that was suppose to be a Phoenix. They look like girls to. Either I am really lucky or am not sexing right but it was fun anyway

LOL..I wrote a book, it's called a very loooong post on here.

Well duh I tend to take things very literally . Does anyone have an adult Maran hen for sale. I would love to have a hen that lays the dark brown eggs. My black sexlink lays huge darker brown speckled eggs but I would love a hen that lays chocolate eggs and one that lays olive eggs. Does anyone have an adult olive egger for sale?

Sundance---the polish are easy----look on the "I just have to talk Polish" thread---a few pages ago-----there are pics. Girl chicks have round bigger tops, boys look smaller, like fedora's--slanted, pretty easy to tell on those. The pic post says 94 % accurate if you sex polish chicks by the tophat alone.
Ok here I found the link:

Ok more pictures...overload time. I wanted to show my Marans, Lisa's chicks, and a couple of the EE that kept a while back, and thought it was a girl. Is that saddle feathers I'm seeing, let alone those red wattles and comb. She/he, is 2 months now. I'll post a pic of her/him..first.
Not the best one to show the feathers I'm thinking on..there's my little Showgirl!
One of Lisa's pretty little Wheatons..aww

You can see the brown more in it's little tail starting in this picture
This one can show off some pretty wing feathers as well. This is so pretty. Not as much tail as the other
but I think it is still looking girly to me.

Look at those puffy cheeks. Very pretty birds, thank you Lisa!
Here is the first picture of one of my Marans..what do you think of these pictures..girl? Took the pics today.
Today is day 4

This is the same chick

Here is the smaller one I was worried about, it's leg, but it gets around fine now. :)

It is so sweet. Put it up by your neck and it makes that sweet little luvy sound.
She/he, is the smallest one. I love her. Maran chicks just aren't on my keep list. I won these eggs.

No adults, but babies. Lots of green eggs in lock down now. I have a lady down this way that is wanting the green eggs too. These will hatch on Fri. But you want those eggs NOW! LOL...I know how that is! Keep checking ksl, and you can even go on and ask about them. Just be careful what you bring home. Make sure they aren't sneezing, shaking their heads. No bumble foot. No excess biting at their rear ends. lol..that's me. The worry wort!

Brad! You're alive!

So happy to hear that ins. is working with you guys on that water problem. Boy, that could be expensive.
We are also having a few sprinklers to work with this year. Scott just ran over one right in front of me yesterday. I had just turned the water on, and he backs his truck up over the sprinkler! He and Austin just drive off while I'm staring at water springing into the air, trying to hit the sky, but falling into the street! Guess what he fixed today.

Windy out there around here..what about up north?

Cynthia I love that little showgirl and the wheatens you got from Lisa are sooooo pretty! Thanks for the info about the incubator. I'm crossing my fingers I'm doing things right. I need to candle them but it has only been 3 days. I'm wondering about the air sacs so I may have to do a few.
Went out to collect eggs and one was broken from hitting the wood floor. Grrrr
