Yeah I saw that. It sure raised my eyebrows. Why in the world would you put a chicken down, save for the bird being in pain or something? Seriously, I hope that line wasn't intended to make them sell fast or something.

Alright, I'm starting to feel more than a little concerned about the new SLW I picked up the other day, and I'm beginning to feel frustrated, as well. She is constantly being picked at by the age group she is in with, all of whom are a few weeks older than her, I think. The SLW looks like she's about a month to five weeks old. If I separate her with just one other girl from that group, either they pick on her, or she feels the need to peck them. So for tonight, she is in her own box with Stevie, my blue Wyandotte cockerel, since that's the only pairing where no one is getting picked on.

I really wanted to avoid having to get another chick to be buddies with the SLW, but I'm starting to wonder if that's not what I'll have to do here. She is missing a lot of feathers and I don't want her to get picked on. Just the same, I do not want her turning into a terror and pecking everyone else. How are you supposed to look a chick in the eye and tell them, "That was naughty! No no!" and have them understand?

Anyone have any suggestions? I have thought about keeping her in her own carrier for a little while, but she does get lonely and her cries yank on my heartstrings. Bah.

What about putting her in a pen where she can see and be seen but not picked on for a few days until they get use to her

It looks a little better today. Thanks for the help. Im so glad you guys are here. Im not sure what i would have done. Once again i have another question. Are the pellets to big for the teenagers? Im wondering if I need to go pick something else up for them.

That is all I feed mine, mix it with whatever you have been feeding them. took mine a few days to get used to it.

I am concerned about this Silkies beak. The top is way over grown. should I have it trimmed or not?

I went out last night before I went to bed and caught the girl. I trimmed her beak 1/2 inch. Top is still a bit longer than bottom but not by much. Her weight seemed ok but this trim will for sure make it easier for her to eat. She was so sweet just let me do what ever, I am going to go out after I wake up and finish my coffee and take her some bread, My chickens think that bred is the best treat ever.

Since I got side tracked this morning and didn't get the milk to the house quick enough, I decided to give it to the chickens.

Cindy, thanks for sharing all those pictures! The bunnies running around with the chickens, that is so cute. Never thought about giving the girls milk that is a great idea.....HenRee looks to be digging in! So no luck with ksl on HenRee? She is such a great layer, I cannot believe nobody has jumped on that! She still picking on everybody?

Red, have you tried squirting them when they peck each other? Seems to work for me, but I have to sit out there for awhile and keep at it before they get the message. I just use a plant mister bottle, with the nozzle turned on stream. Not a super soaker or anything Although there have been days......

Sundance, glad the beak trimming was not too traumatic!

Kidasoto----I put mash with my pellets to keep my teens happy---they do not seem to like pellets too much. As they all get to be bigger, I won't put as much mash in. If I do not give mine mixed, I find pellets all over the ground where they are digging for the littlest bits. When I add the mash there hardly ever seems to be food on the ground.

I have been trying to learn the different chicken colors. For all you color experts. What is the difference between a Bard color such as a bared rock and a cuckoo They look the same to me Now ask me about a cat color and I can go into great detail but I need to be educated on the chicken colors

HenRee will be going to a neighbor as soon as she gets her coop ready. I hope soon, Glimmer and Sparkles are not looking their best. I think she does it at night while they are roosting together. Not sure how to fix that. She panics if I separate her at night.
Mine didn't like the pellets at first and there was a lot on the floor...we were mean and didn't feed anymore until they cleaned it up...They finally got the hint.
