Cynthia, congrats on your showgirls! That's a fantastic hatch. I'll admit that it's not my style of chicken, but I think you've got gorgeous representations of the breed there.

Sundance, I'm so sorry that you did indeed lose one. The ones that have hatched look fantastic!

Lisa, I'm glad you had a good time at Lava. I'm definitely up for a BYC camping trip. We're leaving on Thursday for Yellowstone. I have a house sitter, but I'm awfully nervous about leaving the chickens.

Hattie, I have also heard the dipping a broody in cold water can cure them. I've never tried it though- only had one broody once.

Here's the finished product.

We did the lid on an angle so the birds wouldn't try to roost on it. It's close enough to the stud that when we open the lid, it kind of wedges against the stud and stays open.

I know this is an awkward angle, but here's from the top of the box looking down (with the outside to the right)- we put a piece of wood at an angle, so that way, there wasn't feed sitting at the back of the bottom of the box forever.

We also got our nipple waterers set up, but I'm a little worried they're too low.

Such a beautiful coop. FYI an idea for the feeder. Put it on the outside with the feeding trough on the inside. Then when you need to fill you can do it from the outside. I can't wait to get started on my coop

Ok, you've seen my coop, we would have to make it a long version. We have a hanging feeder in there now. This is so neat! I put my pellets inside the coop, the mash outside. Looove your big coop!

Actually, I have a man door in my coop, so accessing the feed is easier from the outside. I also like that it's completely protected from the elements so I don't have to worry about moisture.

Cynthia.. those showgirls are pretty cool looking, but I have to agree with Sphinx, not my type of chicken.... you sure do hatch a variety!!

Hattie... I do remember dunking some of my broody banties when I had chickens when I was younger... It seems like I had to do it 2 or 3 times though before it worked, that recent article about breaking a broody hen talks about putting them in a wirebottom cage where they can't really brood in a spot with LOTs of light..... Good luck on that too!!!

Working up a plan for a grow-out pen... the chickens in the yard everyday is driving me nuts, and their run is plenty big, I just need another spot for the teenagers!!

Sundance those babies are darling! We want pictures of them all fluffy!

I am keeping the buff showgirl. I have a white outside. Here's the thing. I have this white one, that is a full NN showgirl..in my bator, I have some more, that I am going to candle tonight, that will be all muffed and bow ties. All whites. So, if you are interested in two different looks, you could get this one, and one from the next hatch.

Our power went out again! This time for only a half an hr. But, after 15 mins. Scott and I took the bator out to my little suv. Plugged it in. This bator is so easy to take out. Then, when the power came back on..I waited 15 mins again to make sure that the power stayed on, we brought it in.
Glad it wasn't for hrs like last time. What's going on? We don't usually have this happen this often.

Lisa..you are having a great fun summer. I want to go camping with Scott and Austin really bad. Up my fav. camp ground. Whiting's camp ground.

with nipple watering systems its very common for people to put them too low, you want them to look up and peck it, not look forward and peck. and for the shorter hens just put a stool they can step up on to drink enjoy the nipples, i know i enjoy mine and my girls sure love them too! once you go to chicken nipples you will not go back. but hey i love your feeder!
