this smoke sucks i normally do not mind smoke, i can sit in a room of chain smokers no problem but this smoke from the fires is getting me and i know my girls are having issues with it too, since the start of the fire my egg numbers have dropped fairly sharply. but in other news i have started growing duck weed in a rain barrel for the girls, its high in protein and doubles in size in about 24 hours. its just a small floating plant. they are even making gas out of duck weed now oh and tomorrow i will get goldfish to hopefully breed for the girls. i had planned to start this project a long time ago but have been busy.

Last night I had my baby Polish chicks arrive! 8 out of the 9 that went into lock down hatched. These chicks have very high vaulting. The pictures don't do them justice.
Here are just a few. I am going to email the breeder and ask her if she can give me some kind of idea on the colors.

Here is one I think I might keep I think for sure it is a blue wc


This one looks like it already has some frizzle going on on the neck.

I have duckweed in my pond for the koi. What do you mean goldfish for the girls? I hear you on the smoke. I went outside a bit ago to instruct the house sitters on the chickens and left my oxygen inside. Bad idea. so I'm back in sitting on the couch. Dang. hope it clears up while i'm gone. My eggs haven't dropped but I put the sprinklers in the run for the hens. They love it. They stand with their wings out. They have plenty of shade and water but they just love the sprinklers

Aunt Hattie those babies are darling. I want a frizzled polish. I had one hatch but am not sure its a frizzle polish. I will know better when I get back. The chicks have been gone an hour and I already miss them

Oh they eat meat. I saw two of my girls fighting over a small mouse one day. We don't have mice in the house. I'm sure they hang around the bird's food, but they best watch out!

Hey Elk! Long time no hear! Glad to see you here. Sorry about all of the loss of chickens! Man, you have it bad around there don't you? Life goes on, and a mama hen hatches out some babies, and some with your help. Way to go.

I haven't had to trim the nails on any of mine yet, but they haven't gotten long enough to where I'm worried, either. If I see any that do get long talons, I'd probably file them down.


You know, I've honestly wondered if there's something about blue chickens that makes them jumpier than other colors. No all of them, obviously, since my blue Wyandotte cockerel is about as calm as can be. But both my blue Ameraucana and blue/tan EE are pretty jumpy and do not like to be handled. And that blue splash that Blu now has was quite the drama queen while she was here.


Yep, what Lisa said. Just keep dipping her beak in the water. She's get fussy about it sometimes, but if she's really thirsty, she will take a drink. I dip mine and then tip them upright for a few seconds so that they can swallow, then repeat.

Lisa, were you the one that was saying Lola was attached to your son? I'm sorry, my brain is broken. It's been a really long week. I've noticed with those Delawares that they seem to become strongly attached to a buddy, at least, mine did. When I first got her from Hector, she cried aaaalllllll the way home because she missed her sister. After a few days, though, she became attached to the EE that she was in with, and they were pretty inseparable after that.


Poor Cynthia. You just can't get away from the hatching egg syndrome, can you? Even when you try to quit, there are people going, "Psst! Cynthia ..... Cynthia! Here, take some eggs. You know you want them."

I'll have to get a picture of my Leghorn EE to compare to Dalooras's chicks. I finally named mine. Chuck Norris

Yep, we're keeping Clay. He's a forever bird-as long as he doesn't do something drastic like decide to pluck every feather from the hens, he's here until he (hopefully) grows old and dies. He's 3 weeks older than the 4 chicks he's kept with; the 2 polish from Lisa/Auntie Hattie and the Cochin bantam and Wyandotte bantam I hatched out from eggs from Blujem's friend. He's already proving to be a great rooster. He's protective of his little flock, shares food, and whenever I take him out of the brooder or outdoor pen, the Polish babies cry and carry on like you wouldn't believe! They adore him.
