Utah!

Whoa! I've got a few pages of posts to catch up on. Before this goes any further -

Sasha, good luck on the hatch! I hope the babies turn out okay.

Cynthia, your EE baby does have more feathering than mine, but I don't feel quite so worried now. And I get Silkie envy every time I see your splash. Such a cutie!

Joybells, I agree with Moriah - It's such a shame to have all that space (and grasshoppers!) and no huge flock of chickens to help you out.

Yes. The duckling is positioned backwards and is trying to pip on the pointed end. It is very tricky work, but I have successfully hatched wrong-way duck babies. Carefully score shell where the dark stain is, find beak and free beak/nares to breathe. Then once the others have hatched out, you can slowly hatch the wrong-way baby. Good luck!!

Yes, this happens often with the silkies and showgirls. You do as Iain has said here, just take your time through out the day to pick away at the shell. It may take the whole day if you are getting fresh blood. Good luck, hope the baby is ok in there! Let us know.
Thank you, thank you ladies! I did just as Iain said. The baby is still alive!

There wasn't any fresh blood, so maybe the duckling has absorbed it between last night and this afternoon.

We now have 4 pips, and the 1 I scored and gave a breathe hole to. 2 of them have made a couple more additional pips in the shell, but all that have pipped are rockin' and rollin'. :)

The gal says next week, but.....................................................................I got some more showgirl eggs today. All partridge! They will be either showgirl, or silkies...that's how it usually works, unless they have showgirl to showgirl breeding. Most do the silkies to showgirls. I want a partridge showgirl, and a partridge silkie! It better happen, plus I have more showgirl eggs coming from Cj..look up his site...beautiful! When I get the ones I want, others will have a chance to get some, I hope. Wendy, not sure what color of a Silkie you want, but hoping that Cj sends a variety. He has some beauties.
The showgirls are so hard to hatch. Anyway, I should get something out of these two batches..plus, crossing my fingers on the ones to come this next week, they are all white. With muffs, and bowties. :) My new bator is getting tested for sure. I know I can have both in there. When I did my first hatch, it was so nice to be able to open the bator and not worry about shrink wrapping the others. Even if they were pipped. I just opened the bator once one had hatched, and put it in a nice warm brooder. Those were the EE mixes and so called Olive Eggers..the eggs weren't as green as what I am getting for winning the contest. :) (thanks everyone that voted) Anyway, kept one of the blue EE's, just to see how she lays.
Hey! My black Ameraucana was checking out the outside nest box today. Come on chickie ladies.
The heat is really affecting my sexlink. Never thought it would happen. She didn't lay for two days, but oh boy, did she make noise when she finally laid today..the egg was huge! Bless her heart.

Come on, Partridge!! Good luck!

WooHoo!! Can't even say how excited I am about those birds Lisa!!! Very excited that the OE's are almost ready to lay, cool!!! How old are the Marans?? Seems like Michelle was saying about 8 weeks??

That was smart of you to take those wheatens with you for a lesson, sounds like it was a very beneficial trip.. I need to go over there!! If you have a Blue Wheaten boy, maybe I'll take if off your hands, I'm thinking I like the blue ones... but then I'll have to re-home my Wheaten boy... Might have to think about that for a day... but put me on your list of prospective takers=) (along with that extra girlie wheaten

decisions, decisions....

Cynthia... I'm laughing about you hatching more eggs.. too funny... That's why I can't get an incubator till I have more space for all the silly little things...

Daloorashens--I listed my boy on ksl just a bit ago, so think fast...lol Also I am planning on you taking the third girl. She is already with your Marans and they are getting along splendidly. Marans are a bit bigger than the wheatens. The OE's are out in the main run and coop, there is a bit of chase going on finally, but it is mostly the drama they are making for themselves, nobody is really bothering them but they are skittering around making a fuss, drawing attention....haha drama queens already. The OE's have eaten and had lots of water. The Marans--I put both mine out, one is stressed out and making weird noises, hiding under the other one. The other one is just chilling in the shade with the other one hiding under it haha.

Yours is in the garage with the Wheaten, very happy :) Cindy's boy and girl (and wheaten girl and baby marans boy i hatched) are in the garage as well in another brooder, the girl hiding under the boy. These seem to be quite shy. Love people and so sweet, but they seem worried. One jumped on me this morning and would not get off, like "save me from the monsters mom!" The two groups seem very acclimated to each other though, I was surprised how easy it was to put everybody together today, I had anticipated having to make sections out in the run for everybody, but no fighting :) just hiding for no apparent reason.

Moriah & Red - Hehehe I know right?! I need to get my hands on a bunch of chicks.

Hopefully I can get my handy friends to help me build the roosts and such, because I'm hopeless with a hammer.

I'm great at organizing and arranging, quick at learning genetics for breeding animals, and coming up with ideas for wooden boxes to house the animals, but I couldn't put together a wooden box to save my life.

I'm a newbie at chickens, but I know I'll be looking for breeds that are cold hardy. I'm still figuring out what type of chicken I like.

Best of luck with your hatch, Cynthia. I am resisting the urge to giggle and tease you a bit. I think if I got a silkie, I'd want a white, black or blue (that's the grayish ones, right?). The white could be fun because I could dye it occasionally....

Sasha, so glad that baby is still alive and that you have new pips!

I am so, so, so proud of myself (but I shouldn't speak too soon). I went to the feed store to get more feed and she had TWO gorgeous little polish chicks, looked to be about 6 weeks old, and she offered me a great deal on them because some of the other chicks were picking on them. I said no, but I kind of want to go back and get them.
