just a random question is it common for hens to share the same nest ?

Let me put it this way: I have 7 nest boxes and 7 hens in my main coop. I have only seen eggs in 2-3 of those nest boxes.



I got rid of a chicken tonight. Last summer, my next door neighbor gave me Bow, a RIR who was terrorizing her flock. My flock put her right in her place and things were fine. But, when the raccoon attacked, she was the sole hen survivor. I gave her back to my neighbor where the reign of terror continued. A month or so ago, she asked if she could give Bow back. I agreed, but the hen has been soooooo awful to my poor birds. Tonight I got fed up and gave her back.

So. Down to 23.

About the nest sharing......they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Sideways pics, sorry, these are webcam photos.....







They seem to prefer groups of three or four: There is a bantam underneath the big one that you can barely see! Her head is sticking up in the center.




My bantam, bottom right, always was on the bottom of the pile. Man I miss her!


The question with my flock is....when don't they share lol Wherever the first egg of the day goes, they all go. pretty much always.

Kidsatoto, your baby girl is soooooo adorable! I love brown eyes. None of my kids have them though.

Sasha, glad that baby finally hatched!!! Can you vent sex chickens, or just ducks?


Ok, exactly what is this first to lay contest? I don't want to play if winner gets a rooster. I did have both of my January chicks start laying in the last week or two, so I'm pretty pysched.

Cynthia, that is terrible that the fires are so awful down there. It worries me so much. I hope we get a really great rainstorm. I heard a dj this morning suggest that we start a new tradition here that fireworks take place in January. It would be so wet that no mountains would catch on fire, if someone got burned the snow would be really handy, and it gets dark so early that everyone could be done with fireworks by 7pm.

I've never tried it with chicks, so I have no idea.

Sierra and I watched some youtube videos on vent sexing ducks just before she got her 3 day old ducklings from Metzer (Welshies and Buffs) I practiced on those babies because we got them already sexed, so knew what was what.
I sexed 4 of the 5 babies we've hatched today, and we have exactly 50/50. Of course, the two babies with the best coloring are the boys!

Well crud. Had I known, I could have taken her off your hands. I've got a rooster that I'm pretty sure would be happy to put her in her place.

edited to add that we have a chocolate baby (the 1st pic, of course HE is our favorite) 2 blue babies (1 girl 1 boy) a possible 3rd blue (maybe silver?) and a lavendar. Hard to tell in the pics, but ya'll are welcome to come visit and see them for yourselves!







The last pic here is of the upside down pipper. She's a little weaker than the others, so we are keeping her separated (within the same brooder) until she's a little stronger.

The nicked blood vessel baby has made no progress. She keeps acting like she wants out, but really can't get out, and I can't help it out because I can still see unabsorbed yolk and blood vessels still semi-full. Frustrating. This is 48 hours now for this baby...
We have 2 babies working hard on their pips, they just pipped this morning and everything seems normal for them, so I'm not worried (yet). The last egg that hadn't pipped yet, I candled. It looks like it died the day before hatch day. Oh, so close.

Thanks, Lisa! I just can't get enough of these little cuties.

Howard and Brycen are missing out...it's YW camp this week for our ward. Howard did get to see a couple of the babies briefly after hatching, but then he had to run to the camp site. He's the priesthood presence/protection tonight.

Oh, those baby ducks are the cutest things...So glad they are doing well. Hope the rest hatch with no issues.
