Oh Sasha, those babies are soooooo cute! I hope that nicked vessel baby hatches. It sounds like it was a little too anxious, and isn't quite ready yet. Really fascinating on vent sexing. I'm wondering if it's really hard on chickens, because I would imagine more people on this board would do it if it were more feasible.
Red, I felt like I had to give the giver of the gift chicken first right of refusal, and she did take her back.

I had to help the last 3 out this morning. Humidity had dropped to 69% over night and the 2 pipped eggs were shrink-wrapped. I zipped their shells and pulled back some of the membrane and encouraged them to do the rest. They both pushed out of the shells readily. One of the babies had been working so hard all night to get out of the shell, the top of her poor little bill is raw!
She (yes, she!) made happy noises the entire time I was working on flaking her shell. They are both black & white babies. The nicked baby had a leg sticking out this morning, but was so stuck. I started working to free her (?) and could immediately see why should couldn't free herself....she was encased in about 1/8" goo. It looked like nasty, drying jello. There wasn't any blood this time, thank goodness, but she still had some yolk that wasn't absorbed. It readily detached from the umbilical cord, but it started bleeding. I held that baby in my hands for about an hour, putting light pressure on the yolk/abdomen. The bleeding had stopped long enough for me to be satisfied so I put her in a little box on her own in the brooder. That was a few hour ago, and she's mostly dried off and doing ok. Thinking maybe lavender in color.
