Utah!

Sundance, give me about 6 months and I'll have some- I have a black copper marans pair, but they hatched the second week of April, so they're not laying yet.

Sundance, that does look like a French Black Copper Marans egg.....they are HARD to hatch, lots of fluid and you do have to get them to evaporate through that hard thick shell. I tried 6 and they flopped then I asked the breeder, she said she dry incubates them all the way until just before hatch....I tried that with 6 more and got 2 to hatch. I had 4 live chicks that time but two still drowned. If I go get more eggs from her I will let you know and get some for you too, probably not until spring though. But Sphinx will have some by then :ya And Blujems here in Cache Valley got some of the birds from QCU to breed and will hopefully have some eggs in the Spring too. They are gorgeous aren't they? That started a whole new obsession for me after I set my eyes on those eggs :) From what I have seen the birds are extremely friendly and sweet too, I have 5 out there now and they all are little lap chickens and very well behaved.

Alright, I need some help. For those of you who free range your chickens, how do you round them up when it's time to put everyone away? I let mine out every day, but even though I try to be gentle and careful with them, they seem to think it's funny to run and hide whenever I'm near. I'm sick of it. I just know that one of these days, someone's dog is going to get to them before I can catch them.

Make yourself the source of all things extra yummy. Get a bucket, keep your 'yummy mix' in it. Teach them when they hear you shake the bucket or make a certain call that good things are where you are. They will come running and after you scatter the goods, calmly walk out of the run. My girls are easy, I can't get them to leave me alone if they get out. They run up to me and give me the 'whatcha got' look.

Mine just go back to the coop at night and I lock the gate before I go to bed. I also have them come when I call because I feed them treats when they do that. They love bread so I give them some pieces of bread as a treat I get the bread at the day old store.

Bread line all the way as you walk to the coop. Then you start throwing some into the coop as you stand by the gate. That's if I want them in earlier, but mine will go in every night on their own.

Tried the water bottles in a nest box today. Two of my girls laid right between them! I didn't have enough for another box, but will have to get one frozen tonight.

Ok, for who ever is looking for a great place to live, Pleasant Grove is a great little place snuggled up against the foothills. I know a gal there, that has a nice large flock. She has beautiful roosters, including Maran chickens. So there you go sundance, I haven't talked with her in a while, but she sells eggs. She also has goats. :) I know another gal that lives in Lindon, another pretty place, she also has a large flock.

Chick, my girls are like that also..they come running because they love me so much...I mean because they love my treats so much.
