Utah!

Janet, I raise some birds for eating, specifically turkeys and extra roosters. I'm alright with it because I feel I give them a good life and a quick, clean way out, whereas most factories will keep birds in awful conditions. My hens are all for pets and egg laying, but if I get one that's mean, she'd either be re-homed or headed to the soup pot.

Blu, those kittens! I love that little calico/tabby looking one.

Lisa, my brother's cat is 15, and still going strong. He's a tuxedo cat, as well. I hope he sticks around for a while longer. You can tell that his joints are stiffer now that he's older, but he still plays and moves around just fine. Here he is with our Siamese.

Thanks for the pics Sasha. Blujems, cute cute kitties :) on your littler ones are any of the calicos girls?

Red, cute pic! Love that color pattern on cats, I always end up picking black and white. it matches my house lol

Beautiful bird but I have concerns about gender...I posted on the gender board as well but I thought I'd cross post here just in case. :)
Kimmy - I think its a girl. I thought the males only had lacing on the chest, and not all over like yours. Males have distinct patches of color, like the cape and saddle and part of wing. I have a SLW hen that has HUGE waddles, and I thought she was a he, which is why I looked it up. My SLW cross cockerels about that age are showing the male color pattern. What response are you getting on the gender thread?

Most everyone is saying cockerel on the gender thread. This chicken is about 17 weeks old now. We were gone most of the day today but there wasn't any crowing yesterday or this morning. What age do they normally start crowing? I got him/her from corvidae in case anyone has experience with the coloring on her birds.

My speckled sussex is loud though, bawk bawk baaaaaawk all the time. It's pretty funny. :) I love her though, she's the gentlest chicken we have and my 4 year old always picks her up and she just puts up with it without a fuss.

Think of the calico cat like a sex link chicken. Calicoes are "always" girls. Orange cats are males more often than they are females. Your tidbit of kitty info for the day. :) Super cute kittens, Blujems.

I do typically think of orange cats as male, but my parents have a female orange. Speaking of old, my childhood cat lived 21-22 years. I was glad I had been moved out a few years when she died, it gave me some emotional distance.

Something happened at my place yesterday. My chicken sitter called in a panic. They were there collecting eggs and discovered one of my polish was outside of the enclosure, and couldn't figure out how she got out. They went to stick her back in and found the other polish laying on the ground, mostly dead but no sign of injury or illness.

I called my chicken neighbor to ask her to check things out. She took thing 2 (I think it's thing 2, the cockerel) to her place overnight and has been giving him water through a dropper. She reported everyone else there are ok

She told me this morning he's still alive, but isn't doing well.

No idea what in the world happened. I wonder about human involvement since Thing 1 got out, and our coop is pretty secure.

I'm really hoping its not illness because at least then I know everyone else is ok.

Bluejems, I love your momma cat picture. It reminds me so much of my 1st cat. She sadly passed at the young age of 13.5 years from bone cancer. But she had a fabulous life and was an awesome girl!

Lisa all calicos are female.  Its like the sexlink in chickens

I had no idea! That is awesome, because that is the kind I would like.....and we want a female. I am looking more for one that has the white all over though with black and orange patches. At some point, I know my girl won't be around a lot longer :( Sphinx, yours got soooo old, wow!

That is awful about your THING. I sure hope he/she pulls through....you think it just got dehydrated from being out and not getting back in to drink? I sure hope it works out, and wonder what the heck could have happened?
