Ok....so somebody just laid this one, on the top right. I have no idea who, I can't keep track....it is a little closer, do ya think they read minds? Here it is compared to one of the other greenish ones..... If it turns more green over the next few days I give up, chickens win.

Lisa, have fun at the Journey concert. I've seen videos of their live productions, awesome. Backup plan for the chicken train: I am going to be in Orem on August 11, but I'd need Cynthia to meet me at a pretty exact time- some friends are renewing their vows, and I don't want to show up to the ceremony with a chicken. That's just a little too eccentric for me. Omigosh, your lav laid an egg?! I'm sorry it's green. Crazy! I'd be ok with green. I don't think mine are going to yet. But, it'll be soon now! The second egg definitely looks more blue to me.

Hattie, love the babies. They are so cute.

Kimmy, it's so weird to me that your neighbor was getting eggs, I don't think BLRW lay that soon. I have one that I hatched on 2/6 (so about 26 weeks), and she's not laying yet. Her brother just started crowing about two weeks ago.

Sundance, those sizzles are so adorable! The dark gray is my favorite.

Lisa, you make me giggle. I would think that the egg color may fluctuate a bit from day to day. My Marans has never laid dark brown eggs. The darkest I've seen from her was a polite latte brown with dark speckles. Most of the time, they're just light brown. Some days darker, some days not. Once in a while they have a pinkish shade.

Sphinx, ah! I can see it now:

"If there is any present who have reason why these two should not be wed, please say so now."
"Buk buk buk BA-GAAAW! Buk buk BA-GAAAW!"

So just yesterday I posted about how some of the ladies were checking out the nesting boxes and look what I found this morning!! It's pretty small, I should have put something next to it to show size, but for a first egg I'm thrilled!!

I was in the bathroom getting ready and I heard one of the chickens making a fuss so I looked out there and Boom Lacka (the speckled sussex) was coming out of the coop just bawk-bawking like she never has before. I was very hopeful that this was something new and different happening. :) I ran out to check the nesting boxes before we left and I found a tiny egg! I really think this is from W (the Welsummer) and that Boom Lacka was just doing an encouragement egg song. It's a fairly dark brown with little speckles which more fits the bill for a Welsummer egg, not a Sussex. I'm hoping this means my other ladies will start earning their keep soon!

ETA: The oldest 4 are about 22 weeks now? I got them 21 weeks ago and they were definitely NOT day olds. I'm excited for my BSL (which Cal Ranch sold me as an Australorp mix...are Aussies used in sex links like that?) to lay because they are supposed to go strong all winter. And my Barred Rock...and EE's, and BO and SS and...just all of them. It's like Christmas seeing what their eggs are going to be like and I feel like I must have been doing a good job raising them thus far.

As for the BLRW...I think my neighbors were on crack.

It should only be 16-17 weeks old now and when she told me about it laying eggs it was even younger. Last night i had them out again while I was watering the garden and again it tried to mount one of the chickens (W, who laid the egg today). She was having nothing of it and there was a little stand off. Still no crowing or anything, but I really don't want a rooster. My kids are young and they like to spend time with the chickens. I just wouldn't feel comfortable having a rooster out there.

Cynthia I'm still sad I didn't get the exchequer from you, then I wouldn't be going through this BLRW drama. :)

Red---if they MUST fluctuate, then lets get it going blue to bluer. Or blue to lighter blue....Not blue to green. Poopheads!
Sphinx, hope you get a good blue egg from yours. Be sure to post!
Kimmy congrats on your new layer hooray! :ya And your neighbors are fired. I think they are trying to sneak a roo over on you.

Kimmy, I believe it was Cynthia who had the exchequer. I'm trying to decide who would be fun to mix with my white legbar rooster- like a speckled sussex or maybe even one of the lavender ameraucanas. Congrats on your new egg!!

Red, I'm cracking up over your vision. I'm supposed to take pictures too, so it'll be even funnier! I think you're on to something with the variance in color.

Dangit, I just realized I put the wrong person and was coming back to fix it but you already caught my mistake!

It's definitely green, but I'm thrilled because it's not brown. I think it's funny that we both got our first eggs from our lavenders on the same day. Not sure which one it came from, but I don't mind.
