Utah!

Ok, trying again, picture of my cans of feed.

Like I said, I use the metal cans to keep the mice out.

My mash, looks like I have about 3 weeks left in there since it's summer.

My scratch will last a while longer since it's summer too

This is medicated baby food..Scott was just getting ready to put in some non medicated in with it..only we keep it in the bag so it's separate..just set it on top of the baby food.

For some reason this is blurry, my pellets, I get that in a bag.

Just for fun, my babies out in the new run at the end of the coop that Scott just put together. In here in the day, back to the nursery at night.

A picture of my Polish here..Looks like a barred, or cuckoo?

Not sure about the brown on the face, but it's cute. Sweet little babies. The blacks should lay a dark brown, or lay that dark green egg. They have the daddy Maran in them.

14-16 bucks for 100 pounds?? Sheesh I should come down there too. I am paying 20 for 50 pounds of 20% protein mash at the Logan IFA south feed mill. Too much. Slvrphoenix said that Walton's here sells it for $10 but they are only open weekdays when I am working so I have never made it out there.
:(

Oops oops oops - I messed up the prices thinking 50#, that's how I compare it to feed store... Sorry I was WAY off. $22/100# for scratch, $28/100# layer, 29.50/100 for 24% grower. They sell it in 50# bags too, it's just a bit more. And 3% more if you don't pay with cash or check. They are open Sat until 12:30.

Well those prices make it seems very nice. How much fits in a big garbage can like that? How long does a garbage can last you? With only 8 we are going through a 50# bag of layer crumbles (I think it's crumbles, I don't know I got whatever the guy at Cal Ranch said to get) every 6 weeks or so. I'm not sure exactly how long but I'm estimating. Is that too much for 8 pullets? I have no idea how much they are supposed to eat. :)

In the summer, that can you see in my pictures..last a good two months. Mine free range, not sure about yours. I'm guessing it will be a months worth in the winter, but still..I used to pay 18 something for a 50 lb. bag, now I see today, that it has gone up to 22 dollars. I can fit double the amount in that can for 22 dollars. It's like getting a free bag. This can you see with the mash is a smaller can..the scratch is in a large can. I like Cal Ranch scratch best, so, I buy it and put it in the can..but there is just not beating the price of their mash for the hens, and they love it!

Oh and I'm pretty sure both the BO and BR are laying now. We have two eggs today that are both brown but neither the dark speckled Welsummer color nor the light Sussex color either. So I'm thinking both of the others are laying. Now I'm just waiting for two EE's, a BSL and the exchequer. Then I'll have 8 layers and hopefully they lay well or I may need to add to our flock next year....

Okay so if I buy a metal can and take it there for them to fill up it's even cheaper? How many birds do you have eating layer food Cynthia? My birds don't free range because they would have free access to the garden, but we go out at least once a day and let them out for a while. Once it's winter and my garden boxes are covered up so they can't get in there to dust bathe they will probably have more free time...but by then there won't be many bugs and all that. I just can't risk my garden because they destroy it. :)

I put a small fence around my garden and the chickens pretty much leave it alone.

To have a fence match the rest of the yard (and yes, it has to match

) it would be vinyl and that is pretty pricey. We just put a vinyl fence around their run. The other thing about letting them free range whenever is they hang out on our patio and poop all over it. Which isn't a huge deal, but it is pretty gross.

Our chickens are in our garden daily, but they don't really bother the plants. At least, not yet. Mostly, they keep the bug population down, so I don't mind them running through my squash and tomatoes. They do tend to poop on the patio, but it gets swept and hosed down every so often.

My chickens try to dust bathe in the garden boxes, they eat the ripe tomatoes if I don't catch them soon enough and they eat the little seedlings. So yeah, I don't appreciate their "help" in the garden very much! LOL
