Utah!

We got home a little while ago with all of our chick stuff! I'm ready as soon as Cynthia says go. I'm getting really excited now!

Now it's just time to get the coop completed. We were just discussing the run. I've been reading a thread here on BYC about what to enclose the run with and it just seems so conflicting...I'm gathering it really depends on your local predators so I thought this would be the best place to ask. What does everyone use for theirs?

Also, where do I get DE? Is there somewhere local or do I need to order it?
as long as your coop is predator proof for the night then the run should be made to just keep the hens in during the day. we don't have the predator's that a lot of states have. Wait.....were do you live?

We enclosed the daytime run in chicken wire and the coop (which is like a fort at night) has hardware cloth on the vents. No problems yet and we are in north Utah County. You can see the pic in my avatar.

We're in West Jordan.
i live in Lehi and my coop is predator proof, but during the day my chickens have the the whole yard to run. i do have crow, hawk, and falcon problems but they don't go after the large hens.i did have a falcon go after some chicks that was only a couple months old but they got away because of the bushes that are in the run. (my run is just a 4' fence of 2"x3" wire you can get at home depot. no top). what you need to watch for is red fox. we have a lot around here but not were i live but i have seen them in other areas. dogs and cats are the #1 menace in city neighbor hoods.

ara, the chicks will go out on the 26th, so thinking they should be here by the 28th. My Swedish Flowers are hatching on the 29th..Austin's B-day.. :) Soo, the chicks will all be together at the same time, they will be a flock before you get them..and, my cold should be gone by then..it better be!

Thinking a couple of days of watching them to make sure they are healthy..and it will give me a chance to see the wings feathering come out on the Swedish Flowers, and I can get a better guess at what sex they are. All of the others are pullets..the leghorns, the Buff Orpingtons, Australorps, and the buff sex links. If anyone is interested in any of these, let me know! I want to keep a leghorn, and an Australorp.

Sounds like your getting some good tips on here. I have hawks around here, so my run is covered with chicken wire. DE, is pretty easy to come by. At least around here. I think you will find some. You won't need it for a while.

Have fun getting ready. I will post pictures next weekend for your family. :))
