Utah!

Lott1, I know that onions won't hurt them. My birds got into one of my onion pots and devoured a bunch of the greens
smile.png
They also dig up the bulbs in my onion patch, little stinkers. If anything, they really seem to like onion. I'd imagine that garlic is a similar case.

Hmm, so I'm going to take a guess at what chickens Lott has. The black ones are probably either Black Sex-links or Black Australorps; the gray one could be a Barred Rock, if it has black stripes. If not, it could be an Easter Egger, or possibly a Blue Andalusian.

Okay, so I got a good look at my wild turkey this morning. I now have a miniature emu out there

And I found out yesterday that turkeys make mean drunks - or at least, my white ones do. They were eating fermenting crab apples out of the lawn. Ten minutes later, I had to break up a fight between the two of them. Twice.

Seriously Red, you always crack me up!!!

Welcome to all the new peeps!! Been snowing up here, actually sunny today, so we'll be doing the last of the fixes on the coop expansion today, yay!! All the birds that need to be moved have been moved, and my mom's hens have even laid a little in all the chaos, so I'm hoping my OE will get with the program and go ahead and start laying, silly bird!

Sundance, I need to post the link for the chat thread for the swap, too, lots of chatter, but you can also get questions answered there.... will have to edit this post in a minute, I guess... ok, here you go

Oh, and Bluejems.... very pretty roo!! I like his coppering!

Thanks for replying everyone. We have had them for about a month and a half so they are used to us. I have ligjts in their coop and have been turning them on at night. Wasn't sure for how long and when but it is on a timer so will have my husband time it like you said for the 2 different times.
Also I have one that they pick on it's so sad to see them do that.

They jump on her and just peck the heck out of her. Then she gets up and shakes it off. Poor thing. And one that has a bum leg. They usually leave her alone but saw one do the same thing with her yesterday. Man didn't know chickens had bullies too.
I think maybe it's just the light thing like you mentioned. So will try doing the timer thing. Does anyone know if garlic, onions and things like that will hurt them? And what not to give them?
I'm not sure what kind of chickens I have. I know one is a brown sex-link. One grey one, and 6 black. Not sure what they are called. I'll try to post a pic of them if I can get them to pose for me.
Thanks again all for answering.

P.S. I know Magna isn't such a bad place LOL . I have a son that lives there and likes it and still have friends out there. It's just when I was a kid (oh wait! I'm still a kid!!) when I'd tell anyone I was from Magna they always said "where's that" so I'd have to explain it's where Kennecott is.

I think i know your chickens. If it is the same ones that i am thinking about they might be starting to molt. He got them last fall they have not molted yet. He sold them about the same time you are talking about. He was getting 2-3 eggs a day from them. (He asked me to watch them for a week when he went out of town). Did he have them behind his garage in a garden area with a green house in the area also? If so then i think they might be molting or starting their molt but ether way they probable wont be to good of layers come nest spring-summer. If its the same ones then one or two is always broody. I do have some fertile eggs you can have if one goes broody. All my hens are LF and the rooster is a Bantam.

Daloorashens, yup my Delaware started laying. Cute little pinkish brown eggs. She is really a small girl compared to my others, I have read they are bigger birds. Is yours petite? She sure is pretty. Super good disposition too.

Lisa, I've kind of noticed the same thing with my BO. They're supposed to be large birds, and I have seen BO's before that were big, including the one that adopted my BF not too long ago. The BO I got as a chick this year is still small. I wonder if it just takes time for some of them to grow in?

You guys are lucky. Pullets starting to lay, and here I thought I had one starting. Well guess who I just so happened to see lay an egg, outside?! Miss Piggy, my leghorn..what? Outside? As I saw half of it out, I knew why. It was one of those thin soft shelled eggs. She looks so bad now with this moult. How long does a chicken moult? Here I thought she was having an easy moult, because I saw pin feathers coming in under her wings and on her pink butt. But, lol...she is even more bare down there now, and, on the sides. I am giving her more protien. Boss. Poor girl. That isn't like her to just stand there and lay an egg. It must not feel like an egg. ?? Pretty soft. Felt like a water balloon! So, pretty sure that is what happened yesterday, only in the coop. Floor! Right by the nest she usually uses, because she can't fly up to the roost. Not enough feathers. :(

So, no new girl starting, I didn't think I had any ready yet, next month though.

Moved my inside babies out to the nursery with the other two out there. It is so warm. I haven't even put the tarp down as long as the temps stay well above freezing, which it has here. Tonight is supposed to be in the 40's. May put it down for the new ones for a while. I have a heat lamp in there. I just won't pull it tight and fasten it.

Nice weather!!

Cynthia, I have read that the older chickens get, the harder their molts are on them. How long has she been molting this time around? They can last for months, can't they?

Red, I just hatched her last fall, she started laying this spring! Her first moult.

Decided to take pictures of the eggs..and yes, she eats the oyster shell..she loves it!

You know I had to open it!

A nice size eating egg! I didn't though. :/

Cynthia, that egg is something! Hope they thicken up soon. My BR has no feathers at all on her bum. The other night when it was quite cold I turned the heat lamp on and I caught her on the webcam with her bum in the air under the lamp. It was pretty cute. She has kept laying, but instead of 6-7/week it is 3-4/week. Hope the shells stay nice, I can tell when I break them open that they are getting thinner. Her bum is just pink and rosy, it looks pretty goofy.

How is your Un NN looking? ANy red yet? Mine is very very slightly pink, not a lot darker, still crossing fingers. It is just amazingly sweet. I went in the run today and it came running out and just hung out around my feet, dust bathing and rolling around...then when I walked it would follow, and dust bathe in the new spot between my feet.

You crack me up. I forgot you have a web cam out there, and you saw her turn her butt up towards the heatlamp? LOL..maybe I should turn my lamp on for Miss Piggy.

Non NN, is a girl, I'm pretty sure by now. Now watch. :/
