WE GOT CHICKS!!! Ok only 1 so far. It is so small. Lots of red color but hard to tell, it was trying to get back under mama.

Oh, sooo cute, I hope my broody gets the one under her to hatch, then when these other two, if they hatch, I can sneak them out. I am pretty sure she will take them, she is such a docile girl. Hmm, guess we'll see how she is when the babies are there. My guess is, she will still be sweet to me.

Sphinx, I would definitely start blocking off the old roost to force her to go elsewhere. She'll probably roost outside the coop somewhere for the first couple of nights. I had that happen with some of my birds. Every so often, I still need to put one or two of them away because they're in the bushes.

Madchicken, oh my gosh, that baby is so cute! Congrats on having one out already! Man, that went fast.

So after discussing my lack-of-egg woes with my BF, he suggested that maybe my girls need more light to help them to lay right now. I don't want to rig up light out in the coop, but what I'll do is put a large cage in the garage where I can have artificial light, then pen two girls at a time to see who's laying (and what they lay) I'm kind of excited for this experiment! I know exactly who I'm sticking in the layer suite first, too: my Exchequer Leghorn and my EE/Leghorn mix. After those two, I'll try putting my RIR in with someone, since I know she should be laying.

I have given up on trying to get my girls to roost on the roost! I have not ever had such a hard time. But, I've not had to try and get them to roost on the roost, when there is a light out there. When it's dark, they can't see to get back on, but with the heat lamp, they can see, and go back to the nest boxes. I am having to clean nest boxes often. :/

I have a hen that insists on sleeping in a nest box. I block all but one of them at the end of the day so at least I only have one to clean in the morning.

i have a few hens that like to roost above of the roost on a small ledge about 7 feet up, i drives me nuts but its better than the nest boxes so i let them be.

Cynthia, Mesha, I think my wheaten (from the hatch you guys' wheatens came from) laid today. Blujems you have one too maybe? Can't remember.....

I have exactly one extra ameraucana egg today, everybody laid, then there is one more....and this girl was in and out of the nests earlier this morning, so pretty sure it was her. Now she is out there rolling around in the dirt. Anybody else get eggs from theirs yet? Any day! woo hoo!

Definitely have Utah visitors for Chickenstock on May 4th... I will have poults available at Chickenstock as long as everyone cooperates..

hey birdguy what breed would be a good one if i am wanting them to reproduce on their own and hatch out a bunch of turkeys each year? and on average how many would you guess a hen would hatch out in a year?

Any of the heritage breeds can naturally reproduce.. They are like chickens in regards to some go broody easier.. I pulled eggs last year and didn't let any turkeys set until late in the summer.. still had 3 that went broody and set. If you get a good momma they can set twice in a year.. spring and again in summer. easily do a dozen eggs.

I know I'm not Birdguy, but I thought I'd read that some of the heritage breeds like the Narragansett make good mothers. Shawn, feel free to correct me on that one.

All of the heritage breeds can and will set... just down to individual birds as to how well they do..

Have to share... We made homemade icecream with our goats milk and fresh eggs... one batch of vanilla and one of coconut... Dang but it was good!!

Well, I just listed one of my black Am boys on KSL. I wish I could keep both of them, but I'll be glad to whittle down my boys. I only ever planned on having one or two, anyway. Right now I've got seven .............*cough*.........Time to re-home some. I think I may put up one of the BR cockerels, too. Is anyone here interested in him before I do? I think he's around 4 months old, hatchery stock.
