Utah!

Cynthia, that frizzle is awfully cute. I need to get a new picture of mine that I got from Diana. She is turning out soooo beautiful.

My silkie is also gorgeous, but I'm worried it may be a boy. Hard to say.

Pawtraitart, I may end up buying some marans hatching eggs from you. I need more hens that lay chocolate brown eggs. No other egg color makes my heart go pitty pat like those dark brown eggs.

I did get a gorgeous egg from Shirley today. Shirley was the egg I grabbed out of someone's eating egg basket. Sure glad I hatched her!

I love the dark brown eggs, too. I have a hard time using them for eating eggs sometimes.

So I candled my eggs. Out of 12 I have three growing.

I had one quit. 3 loose air sacs and about 5 not fertile. So much better than my last shipped eggs from back east. I was only suppose to get ten eggs but they shipped 12 and I'm so glad they did. It gave me better odds.

Madchicken sorry about your little chick.

Sphinx beautiful egg!

Pawtraitart wish you had more bantam breeds because I love your birds! I do have one of your bantam cochin's she is a favorite.

So this past summer we put up pond netting over my garden area to protect the girls when they are out roaming around my garden. They have a protected run area but they were always wanting out of it. So we have fence all around and I just bought the netting to fit that space. We have hawks that love our yard. I find them just laying on the grass sunning at times.

Anyway this morning when I got up I look out my bedroom window to see what the chickens were up too and I saw them all huddled in a corner except for one. My little Polish. I noticed white feathers all over in the garden area. I freaked! I sent my DH outside to see because I wasn't up to seeing my little Polish dead.
He found lots of feathers in our yard but no bird. When he went into the fenced in covered area there was my little Polish standing next to a dove in a opposite corner. The dove got scared and flew out a small space in between the fence top and netting. We think the dove must have hit our house and was trying to recover. Our chickens were scared to death of the new bird in their area all except our Polish. She can't see a thing and just assumed the dove was one of the other chickens. I feel so bad for the dove but I am so happy it wasn't a hawk that got to my chickens or the dove.

Lisa so excited for you to hatch some showgirls! I may have to have one.

Just got to get my DH to thinking they are cute.

Just got my eggs :) So they are from a paint silkie roo over showgirl hens--black, white and paint. This will be fun, if any hatch.....some of these eggs are itty bitty. All air cells look to be intact though, woot! They were packaged very well. Will set them tomorrow morning :) I will get a picture, it seems my DD took my camera to photo class. :/

Aww hattie, just saw your post! good luck with the remaining eggs! be sure to give us pictures! What is your hatch date?

Nice egg Sphinx! Wow!

auntie, so glad it wasn't a hawk! I have that problem around here too. Thought one was after our chickens last week, watched my golden retriever that was out there, he kept looking back towards his kennel. I thought, on man, that hawk has it back by the corner of the fence..no..the chicken had flown over the dogs fence, and was probably chased by my Toby, and ended up in the kennel. Wasn't hurt on the body, but it had hurt it's comb while trying to get out of the kennel. That would be the EE mix. Clipped her feathers and my blue EE. She was up on the gate to our carport. Silly birds.
So, you got twelve eggs, and only three developing..what state did you get them from? I had the best luck on the lower East Coast states. Upper was awful. Oh I hope you get a couple out of them.

Lisa..yes, Iowa..great state to get eggs from!
Tiny eggs means a little less heat. They can cook up pretty easy with the temp around 100. Even the 99.5. Believe it or not, having them at just 99 is good for the small ones. And, of course, the lower humidity, it tends to makes the eggs warmer if too high. Low 30's, just a little humidity is great. Good luck! Waiting for day 7 for good news on fertility!

Lisa December 7th is hatch day.

I just got me some SQ bantam Polish to hatch again. I figured as long as I have little chicks I might as well have all that I want. :) Now if I could just get my bantam Ameraucana's!
Sasha I may have to wait for yours to start laying.

I think they were from North Carolina. The bad ones I got of the Ameraucana's were from Florida. I'll never order from there again.

I am thinking we may try to decrow some roosters on Monday, We have 2 to do so far. If anyone has roosters they want to donate to the cause let me know. They may or may not be returned. It is a pretty interesting sug=rgery. You go into the thoracic cavity not the neck and work on the air sac not the vocal cords. I'll try to take some pictures of the procedire.

AAAAHHHHHH! the first chick is dead. I don't think mama showed the chick how to drink water and eat. Ok i still have 3 more days of eggs to hatch. Not messing around anymore, i am firing up the brooder. If i see a crack, hear a peep, or an egg looks at me funny its going in the black box.;I guess its not nice to mess with mother nature and try to trick her into hatching eggs in the wrong season under her home made incubator. But guess what mother nature its not nice to trick a MADCHICKEN.
