Vacation Advice needed

I worry about malfunction with the automatic waterer. Are they big enough you can put pans of water out as a back up? Not buckets though they can and do drown in them. No way to predict how they will behave toward the eggs. I am a worrier. I have my daughters come over each day when we go to off to check mine to make sure none of them have managed to hang themselves on something or get stuck somewhere. What side of Tally are you on? I am in Blountstown. Maybe you could get someone to come every other day and I coudl run over on the in between days to check on them? I wouldn't mind. I would have to run over after school but that is no problem for me (I teach high school, I used to teach at Godby).

Maybe put a post on craigslist, or a local community notice board, if your area supports such a thing,

"Chicken Egg Collector , Wanted, for one week in November, while I am on vacation.
In return for a daily check to insure automatic waterers/feeders are operating correctly, you collect and keep approx 9-10 eggs a day.

Personally I would be a little leary about that, you never who your dealing with and you might come home to an empty house. Not a fan of craigslist.

While I appreciate many of you would not leave your chickens alone. I'm going out of town the week of thanksgiving. So most of my friends will be gone. I have arranged for a person to come once during the middle to check on things and refill anything that is needed and collect eggs. HOWEVER, chickens have lived without humans for hundreds of years and these chickens will not be on their own. They will be in a weather proof coop with 2 weeks worth of food and water and I will only be gone one week.

All my animals are set up to be self reliant for 1 week at a time. It is the rule at my house. I like to travel and I've never had any trouble before. This will be the first time I have left the chickens so I was trying to figure out what would happen to their behaviors.

Welasharon. I appreciate the offer. You have a PM.

And no I would not post on Craigslist for a stranger to come to my house knowing when I'm leaving, when I'll return. Sounds like a great way to come home to an empty house. I love craigslist but not for that.

You can always try sittercity.com for someone to look in on them. This way you can see if they are background checked and can check references. When I pet sit I only charge $10.00 a visit, as I'm not staying there the whole time. Hope it all works out for you!
