what do you do when you go on vacation, for your hens/ i am going in july and have 4 hens and will have by then 3 months old hens, i was thinking of having aneighbor boy he is 10, collect the eggs each day, and he can keep them for his family in return for watering and feeding them, for 3 or 4 days that someone will be gone for.

That sounds like a great plan. Have him come over and watch how to collect, feed and water a couple of times. Make sure you give the family and emergency number to contact you or someone that at least has experience with chickens in case they have a concern. Have fun!

I have a 9 year old, and I think she is responsible enough. But it's going to be VERY important that you stress to this child the importance of closing up the coop at night. No forgetting. And maybe go over the plans with the parents, just so that they know what is going to be expected. If it was me, I'd throw in a $20 for his time -- kids are probably more motivated by the cash than the omelets...
