after a lot of thought and internal debate I've made the decision to vaccinate for Mareks in my flock. i realize this is ideally done when they are first hatched but the goal is to vaccinate before exposure. they are still inside at this moment but soon will be outside.I've learned this vaccine I'm getting is related to the herpes virus of turkeys HDV and HVT not actually the Marek's virus mdv and creates antibodies. and I'm not actually giving the marked virus. as i understand it and was explained to me by a doctor. because il be showing my bird it does put me at a greater risk than a closed flock so I've decided to protect my girls. i hope it goes well and I've chosen to do the right thing for my birds. the reason I'm posting this is i wanted your opnions on vaccinations for this disease
i was mis informed for quite a while believing if i do this my girls will be shedding the virus from vaccination on out. later I've learned after consulting with a Dr. that this is just not true. being it is NOT Mareks il be administrating. what is your opnions on this vaccine and do you think higher risk groups like people who show should do it?thanks for your input.

I have all of my hens vaccinated against Mareks I think that since you will be showing, that you have made a wise decision. Did you know that if you walk on someone's property and their hens have it, you can bring it home to yours? I feel very happy that I got hens who were already immunized. As chicken keeping becomes bigger and bigger, you'll find yourself around other peoples chickens more and more often (especially showing them)! You did the right thing in my humble opinion.

thank you sooo much for answering! i feel better after hearing from you! your right ! with showing I'm taking a big risk and it only makes good since to protect them! especially since showing in my town does NOT require vaccine I'm even taking a bigger risk! guess I'm just worried about the contact she will be making with other chickens! i love my girls so much I'd be heartbroken if i got something i could have prevented for a few dollars for a vaccine! Thank you again for your opinion!

well I've done it! my girls are doing great! what you do is open the vaccine then add 3 units diluent to the vaccine then incorporate the two then add 3 units of air then take entire contents and inject into diluent. incorporate that then each bird gets 0.2 units vaccine under the skin of neck facing away from the head. this vaccine is sub Q. or just under the skin only. I'd pinch up the skin then inject away from the head. the girls didn't even flinch and were eating right after! thank God! i feel good about protecting my girls! I'm glad i did it!
