Hi Everyone....just wanted to remind all the emu owners that if West Nile or EE WEE is popping upIn your area.....you should vaccinated your emu for it. Once they have it most will die from it.... I just vaccinated all mine and the horses.. A good.chunk of change but better than a big vet bill... Hope everyone's critters stay safe this year....

thanks for the reminder, we are located in mosquito heaven here on the Mid-Atlantic Coast. My vet had never even seen an emu outside of the zoo before I got mine. Can you tell me the size dosage and the approximate cost of getting an emu vaccinated for WNV and EEE?
Thanks,
Bill

I order mine from Jeffers equine. About.$30 a shot or $230 something for 10 vial dose of.EE WEE & WESTNILE etc all in one... Emu gets same dose as horse... 1ml. I give in the thick part of thigh.
With all this rain its mosquito heaven. I feel like giving myself.a shot... Hehe

The birds in the profile picture were approximately 9 months old when that picture was taken in December 2011, they are 18 months old now. I have no idea what subspecies they are, one came from Virginia Beach, VA and the other two came from a farm in Westminister, MD. In the picture they have their necks extended because I had been handfeeding them grapes and they are looking for more. In that posture, they do appear to be a little taller than when they are in a more relaxed posture.

This is one I had that hatched out the end of February of this year.. he's standing next to a 4 foot tall roll of poultry netting

Lol.. they do grow up so fast!

For mosquito control we use mosquito dunks in any standing water that isn't changed out every day (water troughs for the equines, rain barrel and water lily tubs). It's made a BIG difference in the amount of mosquitos around here.
Earlier in the season I was getting bit at least 10 times a day as I was feeding the critters. Since adding the mosquito dunks I haven't gotten bitten at all. I know there has been a problem this year with west nile outbreaks here in Texas.. just wish I had thought to use the dunks at the beginning of the season. I'm planning on using them year round now.

that's a good idea! We change out all of our waterers at least once a week, but we are surrounded by farm ponds and creeks, so mosquitoes are a given in these parts. I am 5' 10", so that gives you an idea of the height of the birds in the profile picture!

Walmart sells them.. you can also find them on Amazon.. i think most hardware stores probably carry them as well..

these are the ones I got at walmart (back in the garden department).. it took a few days for them to kill off the mosquito larvae .. but once they kicked in it was a major difference. I THINK it might also affect the adults too (even though it's listed as a larvicide) cause I haven't seen any more adult mosquitos since we started using them.

Amazon sells bigger packages of them.. so that's where i am going to order the next batch. You can also break them up for smaller containers.
