Vaccinations for MG - do you recommend?

Interesting read.

I have show birds and enjoy showing them once or twice a year. Even with quarantine it does not appear I could ever be sure I was MG free if adults do not always show signs.

There are several hundred exhibitors at these shows. The birds are all in close proximity to each other. I would bet my birds have it.

Because I have "pure" lines of birds, they lay less and have less vigor than crossbred birds do. Hybrid vigor helps... with my layers I a sure..

Show birds just do not lay the number of eggs a good cross does, so no way to gauge on egg production. I can see where it could be a problem, for you, specially with book learned non-chicken people that read -MG is bad kill all birds.

Your problem would be birds in other "allotments" and wind, tweety birds etc, will spread it back to your new flock is my fear.....

Yes this is what I'm worried about but I think I'm going to invest in some netting to cover the whole allotment, change shoes when people come on the allotment and ask people to clean their shoes if they want to come on, hopefully this will help a little. I think I'm going to vaccinate. Thank you for your help

I have plastic boots and latex gloves I make people wear when they come here...

But with air currents (wind) blowing leafs, tweety birds and even predators carrying diseases I find some of it a losing battle..Not to mention my enjoyment in raising and showing birds....

I have started vaccinating for some things others I will do the best I can, knowing there will always be some loses. I have become a little more aggressive in my culling of sick birds as a sick bird is a place where other disease can fester and gain strength.

Oh, I will have to look into shoe covers, and I'm sure hand sanitiser will be fine in place of gloves? I've never culled just one chick, I think one out, all out and start over with eggs from another breeder

From what I understand hand sanitizer will kill bacteria (or most of it) but not viruses...I could be wrong. My wife told me that, she is a traveling nurse that visits people in their homes.

Ah okay, gloves it is then. I hope my future birds thrive, thank you again for your advice. I'm such a worrier sometimes

I know a show in NJ just had birds being sold there that carried it but they didn't act sick. It's so highly contagious that more people's birds have it than they think. Most of mine never show a sign. Like I said tho, I have never had one die yet and I don't treat them with anything. Just keep they dry, clean, and fed. Mine lay heavily and never get thin. If I sell any to people with other birds, I let them know about it.
