Valbazen is a Godsend!!!

I previously posted requests to help find out what was wrong with my poor Rooster, Einstein. 3-4 trips to the vet over the past 2-3 months and after we finally got the answer - worms.

We bought Valbazen and I read on several forums and in articles that proper dosing should be AFTER roundworms are initially removed as to not overwhelm the chicken.

Unfortunately, everything I read suggested Wazine first, then Valnazen 10 days later, but Wazine has been pulled from the market and I've not heard of too many replacement suggestions.

I brought Einstein to the vet again yesterday with samples of three different chicken poos to be tested. I asked him about the Valbazen we bought and he suggested using 1/2 of the dose initially as a replacement for Wazine, then the full dose in ten days.

We treated everyone yesterday, this morning, Einstein pooped a pile of worms onto my floor!!! This Valbazen is no joke! It kills EVERYTHING, including roundworms, but because we gave such a small dose, there is less risk of overwhelming the flock during the process. I wanted to share the suggestion of what we did so anyone looking for help with Valbazen dosing could try this.

I'm going to go poking through his poo to see if anything else shows up, and in the meantime we'll wait for the results from Cornell. I'm so relieved to finally know what was ailing my poor baby.

Valbazen is very gentle and it can be used as a first dose of wormer. It is used in humans as well as in animals. There are some old posts here on BYC that recommended giving Wazine first, but that is no longer recommended. Dosage of Valbazen is 0.08 ml per pound given once and repeated in 10 days. That comes out to about 1/2 ml for a 5-6 pound chicken. Glad that it has worked for you.

Thank you. I used the calculations I saw on here, based in weight and a full dose for mine would be 0.4ml but to be safe we did 0.2ml and we'll repeat the 0.4ml in ten days. Even the half dose gave fantastic results, so I'm so happy. Thanks again!

Great post! I’m stressing right now about treating my flock. I have liquid Safeguard (fenbendazine), but I like how your method and dosage didn‘t hurt your babies. Where did you get your Valbazen? I can’t get half the wormers people suggest because I’m in California .

My parents got me some from th feed store in CA. It’s for goats. Ask for goats because you most likely won’t get it if you say it’s fir chickens. And order the smallest amount. My parents got me a 500ml. That’s way too much!

Didn’t want to start a new thread, but I like the idea of Valbazen versus Safegaurd for my flock.. I always treat the birds for mites/lice with ivermectin, about 1-2 yr, and I’ve never noticed any worms. Until today, a girl pooped in front of me and I took a peak. They aren’t round worms, they were maybe 1/2-1inch small and flat, not white either. No clue what kind they were, but heck I’m going to be deworming the whole flock! So - they haven’t even been directly “dewormed” before (I’ve got 4yrs to 4months) - I don’t have a scale, I guess I could see if TSC has one, but what’s the dosing for the birds? I’ve got two big Roos and one of my 4mo is a small thing still… eek. TIA!

You mightve seen shed intestinal lining. A photo will help.

I didn’t have my phone on me and when I came back out to take a photo, I couldn’t find the poop. It was definitely wriggling around, so I don’t think it was shed lining? I saw two moving things

Glad you got this treated! Worms are NASTY and just suck the life out of our birds... :-(
