valley quail first time

We had three baby quail initially, then got a few more later, but from the time they were babies one would chirp constantly. It never seemed to sleep, was always running around and watching their surroundings.
That bird grew up to be a roo and is definitely our "alpha bird", it keeps a watch over the rest, investigates things first, tries new foods first, figures out new cage additions first (new feeders or waterers, etc.) and generally is the most inquisitive and watchful bird we have.

I wouldn't worry that anything is wrong with this baby unless it isn't eating or drinking as it should or you see some conflict with the others.

Good luck!

Nice little ones...well done my friend! Christmas is not too far so if that little guy continues chirping all the time, by Christmas it will be nice and fat! :) I'm joking obviously!

This is the first time for me too. My Cali eggs have pipped about 48 hours ago but have not hatched yet! I have widened the pip hole slightly so that I am sure the little one inside can breathe properly.

How long do californian quail usually take from pip to hatch? Temp is at 37.5C and humidity between 70% and 80%.

What do you think?

Try to keep the humidity closer to 70% if you can. Should be any time now. :-)

Should happen within 12 hrs. And try your best not to help them out or open the incubator.

Result...
> 1 out of 4 Cali hatched with grossly deformed legs to an extent that its feet were up by its head! Practically it was trying to walk on its knees. Culled
> 2 out of 2 common quails hatched. Both with deformed feet. One is up and running as crazy and the other one was all the time sleeping beneath the brooder and died after 2 days. The crazy one got some quail running shoes for his hatch day and now his feet are fine :)

I have read that deformed feet are caused by a lack of riboflavin (B2). Now I am adding it to their water and dusting it on their treats. Is there any other vitamin I should keep an eye on?

Just my thoughts, but I would think it comes with the risks of using an incubator. The first time I used an incubator, the chicks hatched and some were fine while some had crooked toes. Those that were brooded by the mother bird, all had perfect toes when they hatched. Maybe it's just a coincidence, I'm not sure, but I'm sure nothing beats the natural way. I would suspect lack of riboflavin, genetics, etc. only when the eggs were naturally brooded and still came out deformed.

Could be but my coturnix from the same parents usually hatch ok.

I am feeding vitamins to my quail now and they have stopped laying...just my luck! :( I'll wait till they start laying again, mark the new eggs and see if I have crooked toes again.
