So we can't decide which type of bird we want. We built an outdoor aviary and since mixing isn't going to be an option was wondering how to decide between the two. Seems a lot of folks have coturnix (good layers/smaller bird/easy to care for) BUT the Valley is our local wild bird and so pretty when full grown. Are their eggs just as good for eating? We are getting these birds for pets/fun mostly with the added bonus of eggs to collect and now and again some meat. Not going to breed other than to keep our pen full.

What's your experiences of Valley? Votes please

valleys won't lay near as much...they don't breed as easily in pens as the cotournix nor do they grow as fast

having vally will probably mean more permits than the cotournix (only guessing here)...it is something you might want to look into

I have never had valley so I can not make a comparison that would help you. However I just wanted to mention that since the valley is native to where you live you may need permits to keep them. Just something to keep in mind.

Valley's are flighty and as was mentioned before don't lay a lot eggs compared to the courtnix and the cortunix are mature by 7 weeks old and start laying.

Also you will need a permit to raise Valley

If the permit thing doesnt bother you I would go with the valley, I personally like my gambel the best but my valley are a close second they are a very interesting bird to watch and enjoy. Plus its fun having two different pens with valley because the flock call back and forth which I find very comical.

permits aside...and you just want an aviary of bird to watch ..I'll take my valleys hands down over my coturnix....
