I have a chicken with vanishing tail feathers. She could pass for a porcupine when you pick her up because of how many feathers are broken near the base.
She gets scrambled eggs mixed with her feed regularly and until a month ago she was near the top of the pecking order (feathers started vanishing in November, thought she was molting) but now she cant get herself up on the roostbar (been putting her up every night for two months after I saw her with a big poop turd on her) and I discovered today several bumblefoot scabs on both feet which had been concealed by our local clay.
I soaked her, removed the scabs, extracted the pus globs, applied antibiotic, and bandaged her feet. She has never limped and didnt even after i dug deep enough to remove the dead or damaged tissue. They were large scabs but fortunately they were not too deep.
I have cameras in the hen house, chicken run, and covering the yard where they spend most if there time. she is not picked on particularly, she is active and alert, the other chickens almost ignore her unless treats are involved...than a peck might fly but she gives as good as she gets.
They were recently wormed with ivermectin and have their choice of layer pellets, a good mix of scratch seeds, and as many bugs or plants as they can eat.
Any ideas?
Also, any ideas for keeping chickens out of flypaper? It took three days for that girl to forgive me. I thought I had it high enough in the rafters and I know that I clipped their flight feathers.
Thank you in advance.
