where chickens dare to tread..
After a long battle with our neighbors... much stress, fees, and paperwork... the zoning board of our town approved our variance on Thursday. They also agreed that our hens were indeed therapy animals for our son with mood disorder. We don't even have to move the coop away from the neighbor's property. (The board said they doubted it would make the neighbors happy to do so, so why should we give ourselves extra work?)

It was a really happy day for our family. I've read about a lot of people being hassled and being denied a variance, but I just wanted to say, it can happen! Yes, I realize it depends who makes up the board. But miracles happen everyday....

Congrats! Not to change the subject, but i noticed it looks like your chicken (and son:) are hanging out in a rhododendron bush? No ill effects? (they are on a bad plant list - along with a million others, it seems) I have some stumps I wanted to leave in place as cool roosts... and that looks pretty cool!

I didn't know about the rhododendrons being on the bad list until long after the chickens were hanging out there... and already eating all the leaves. They've never had any ill effects. ?? Strange, I know. But since they seem fine, I didn't see any reason to keep them away from them. We created the pen there when the neighbors started harassing us, since the bush hid them and provided a safe haven from prying eyes.

I'm glad to hear that - I have a bush I'd like to leave in place, and the aforementioned stump - kind of makes it like a stealth coop - they'll be "chickens of the trees" so to speak!!
