variations on the greener pastures recipe

I just started experimenting with making my own feed. I live where it is only green in the winter and early spring and I will not pump water for a lawn. I can buy from the local feed mills; barley, wheat and oats which is locally grown I doubt that it could be cert. organic but it is "dry land farmed" and I can get field peas and BOSS I don't know how local those are but I really don't mind because it is available from local people I know. I first started with just sprouting wheat my chickens love it so today I will be adding more ingredients after my visit to the feed store. I decided to try this for happier chickens as they seem to like whole grains better than processed and for better meat and eggs. I am growing heritage chickens so trying to raise them the "old fashioned" way because that was the way they had been bred and raised....I think I might be saving money but not saving time but I do have the time.

I feed just plain old whole oats. This way I can sprout them.

The co-op idea sounds good for those of you with just a few birds. For those with more birds look for where farmers buy their seeds for fall and spring planting... Not a feed mill. (edited I mean feed store..)

What I'm getting are re-cleaned oats and barley and wheat for planting just where I live it's the local mill because they buy and store it for the farmers so I guess it depends on where you live..no co-ops around here. If I had a place to store it I could have feed mixed the way I wanted it but 2,000 lbs at a time I sure hope to never have that many birds......

I take that back I meant feed store. A feed mill can be a good place, and often where people buy their grains for planting..

Better watch out... a ton of feed is not that much.. Once chicken addiction kicks in...
