I noticed today that a couple of my chickens have some minors frostbite on their combs. I was wondering, can I put Vaseline on them? If so, how much and how often do I apply it?

when i made a post about frostbite, i was told to never touch it because it’s extremely sensitive. unless it’s really really bad and they need actual medicine- it’s best to just leave it and let it get better on it’s own

Vaseline (or coconut oil) does work to prevent windburn, I don’t know for sure about frostbite. Since I live in a very windy cold area I will put Vaseline on combs even if they have some light frostbite already (very gently!). The chickens will go out in the wind unless it’s really bad so it’s just to prevent more damage to their combs.

I also put Vaseline on my own face when I have to go out in the cold and wind, I figure if it works for my skin it will help theirs.
