Vaulted silkies

Welcome to BYC. I don't have any silkies. (I have a mix and some of her chicks & I love them)
I think silkies are adorable but they seem a little high maintenance and I don't think they'd do well in my flock.
If you decide to raise them I'd advise against free ranging.

I see some are suggesting not to free-range your silkies, and they're right in the majority of situations, but we have for years. It all depends. The worrisome part is they can't fly to avoid a predator and with the feathers in their eyes, if not cut, they can't see a predator. They also are not high up on the "smart chicken list." If you have a safe place with protections for them against any possible predators, it would be fine. In the first two years, we lost two who were free-ranging to an unknown predator, but none in the last five after we added wind spinners, motion lights, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. ☺️
