Vegans of BYC!!

Pics
Not vegan or vegetarian but going kosher and was hoping if I could get some pointers for meat alternatives to make SOS (I can't say the military name but it also know chipped beef and gravy). I know of beyond meat and another brand (tried the hamburger from restaurants and its... okay.) But wouldn't mind input of the other options 😅 hope this post is okay.

My mom just orders a mushroom or onion ring to put in the place of the patty-
I myself was never fond of meat so I don't know of any replacements.

Hi everybody-I'm vegetarian (because I've never really liked meat and animals are cute) but I'm considering becoming a 'logical vegan' which is the name that I've come up with meaning that I don't buy eggs and dairy products or create demand for them,(Example- eating non-vegan food at a restaurant) but if i'm not creating demand in eating it, then I will (Example- at a Christmas party I would eat a pre-made dish that's only made once a year because in taking a slice of cheesecake or whatever, I'm not creating demand for it, because my friend isn't constantly producing cheesecake to replace the others)
I want to do this because I'm really not a fan of what happens on factory farms (cows knee deep in their own manure, chickens that never see the sun, etc.)
Thoughts?

Portobello are still the superior pattie replacement for hamburgers in my mind. :caf I'm the weirdo tho that I don't need a 1 for 1 replacement. In part it enters uncanny valley, if I want a vegan or veggie option I wanna enjoy the non meat flavor :idunno Gal Gagot vegan mac n cheese pack is like that perfect balance.

Of course its okay!
Well, beyond meat is one of the better ones imo. If you don't like commercial kinds, you could maybe try making your own version

I haven't tried it with beef yet, but I'm learning to make a really good duck and chicken substitute. It's easier than I thought it would be, so I don't buy commercial ones so often anymore.

Others may have some brand names, or recipes they reccomend.

I was actually on a Kosher diet way back, way before I became vegan, I ended up going pescetarian because it was so hard to find suitable meats and substitutes that I liked

This is definitely a good step in moving away from supporting factory farming etc
It makes sense, but personally I'd still be uncomfortable eating anything that came from there. And if in your second example, your friend starts to anticipating you taking a slice of cheesecake, they may start spending more on a larger cake etc.

I definitely would find it easier to cut all ties, or source from friends, my own animals, etc instead-- but if that's what you feel comfortable doing, I say you should give it a go. It's your choice at the end of the day, and every time you don't pay in to factory farming, you made a little positive difference

My mom was vegetarian back in the day before having me, so I can dig in her old cook books. Dad was/is classic meat and potatoes, but since I been doing alot of the cooking he having to deal with the veggie nights. The dairy alternatives though are getting pretty decent...

Krogers dairy free sour cream can burn though that a crime against humanity :sick

I personally don't mind the commercial options on occasion but I know it's not as healthy as they tote.

I’m in favor of moving away from all the factory farms…. We buy our cow from local farmer, hog, and chickens from neighbor that raises them and get our eggs from our chickens. I eat a lot of meat but rarely buy anything from a grocery store. We have a 1 year old and sad we don’t have any goats to milk right now so we could use that for the kids milk. The store bought stuff just doesn’t taste good to me anymore either.

100% what I try to do. Not easy in Mississippi so gotta make compromises in town alot of times unfortunately.

I’m actually most excited for spring because I spent about 75 bucks in Amish country here in Ohio on a bunch of seeds for the garden. I broke ground on a 100’x 50’ plot of land for the family garden last year and bought a set of discs for tractor. So I will be jumping into those threads here soon! That’s an area I want to learn more about in growing veggies and fruits so I’m sure all of you can help!
