That is not much of an arguement. There is an obvious difference between animals, fungus, bacteria and plants. Animals have a central nervous system and cognitive function. While the others do not. They feel and have an awareness of their surroundings. Especially higher order animals like chickens, pigs, cows, sheep and goats. Chickens have a mental ability above most human toddlers. Pig's intelligence is close to the level human 5 yr old. (As a point of reference, a human's cognitive abilities are fully formed by 11 or 12.) I am not comfortable eating something that understands that it is going to die amd fights to stay alive. I am also not confortable eating something that can form relationships, have a social structure, develop parent-offspring bonds and communicate with eat other. That is too close to being like a human.

There is also many more reasons to avoid meat. Due to the law of energy loss through transfer, it is impossible for animal products to be as efficient as plant foods. We already have an over burdened world with rapidly declining resources. It is not fair to feed that food to stock animals over fellow humans. And yes, do to the structure of global markets, people really do have to compete with are meat habit for basic subsitence.

Also, meat and dairy production is the main contributor to global warming. Unlike cars that produce CO2 -a minor greenhouse gas that can easily midigated - animals produce methane. Methane is at least 22 times more potent than CO2. It has the ability to rapidly warm up our climate. As the planet warms up, especially our oceans, we will permentally lose methane sinks. Reduction of methane through less animal farming is critical to reducing methane in the atmosphere. It is repossible for at least 65% of methane release. Other human activities are responsible for at least another 20%.

I hope this isn't turning into a debate between selective omnivores and vegans/vegetarians. While I respect folks in their decision to abstain from eating meat, that is a bit different from agreeing with all of their reasoning for it, particularly when it questions my own personal choices about why I eat the way I do. That I will be more than happy to defend.

I don't consider vegetarianism a superior ethical or environmental choice over a thoughtful omnivorous diet consisting of humanely raised and slaughtered meat.

If you want to be a vegetarian, by all means be one. But don't mange science to support your decision! I saw several baseless claims in this thread and as someone who was a vegetarian for years and someone who has done extensive nutrition research over the past 2+ years, it is hard for me to just let them pass!

Be careful where you get your information. If someone posts a study making a health claim, research the study! Many are shoddy and often times information is twisted and mis-reported. Who funded the study? What methods were used? Who stands to profit?

A lot of what people think they know about health and nutrition is pure garbage. I used to believe a lot of it too and it almost killed me.

As for why I would even read this thread....I have vegetarian friends and I cook for them at times. Just looking for recipe ideas and suggestions.

I have been a pescatarian for almost 3 years. This means I eat fish, but not chicken or pork or red meat. In fact, I just had shrimp for lunch. I became a vegetarian because at the time, I had very strong animal rights-like feelings. I do not have those feelings any more. I do feel it is ok to eat meat. I am for the humane treatment of farm animals, yet I am not for the changes the animal rights groups want for the agricultural industry, as those changes will very much hurt the agricultural industry. My parents were very much against my pescatarian ways at first, but are ok with it now. I am still a pescatarian because I am so used to it, and change seems so strange. I have really considered eating meat again, and may do it in the next few months, who knows. I do feel weaker than before. This is because I don't have a very good diet, and don't eat as much healthy foods as I should, simply because I am picky. But IDK at this point.
I hope to play high school soccer in the fall, and I don't want my pescatarian ways to harm my performance.

You opened up the debate. I only offered a counterarguement. If you can't handle that, then don't make statements that are obviously contrary to many people on this thread.

As for my sources, they are from solid studies. The China, Okinowa and Seven-Day Adventist studies that others have mentioned are very well planned and carried out studies. The China Study is an ongoing research project done jointly between Oxford and Cornell Universities for the last 27 years. This is definately 'junk science'.

Everyone, just remember this isn't supposed to be a debate thread. Just a safe place for vegetarians to discuss our dietary choices, share recipes, talk about how it's affected our lives, and so on. If you come into the thread just to refute those reasons or talk about why you AREN'T vegetarian, it doesn't make for a very friendly thread. Omnivores are welcome, but be respectful! I agree with Wifezilla somewhat, and be sure to check your sources if you choose to use statistics. As this is not a debate, though, it would be good if we can simply avoid that sort of thing because it gets everyone arguing and pointing fingers and getting defensive.

I was so happy with where this thread was going before it went back into debate mode. On both "sides," just think twice about how your post will be received before you post.

Pretty much the point I'm trying to make.

I signed into this thread in support of vegetarians and vegans because I respect their choices and their reasons for making them, and continue to follow it for the same reason. The rationale for their diet is often quite similar to my own for eating the way I do. I'd appreciate the same respect.

As to debates, well...

Don't start none, won't be none.

All I was saying was study the studies. For everyone listed I have a counter study.

Now, back to the topic. I have a killer vegetarian crustless quiche recipe. Anyone interested?
