I know it doesnt help matters now .... but I believe its sounds very much like she had Pendulous Crop. I have put up a link for you to check out.

I agree, we have decided that she had sour/pendulous crop, though it came on suddenly and she hadn't lost all that much weight. Since she was molting, she did look thinner slightly but felt about as heavy as always. I miss Velvet because she was unique, but now am much more prepared to see it earlier and deal with it. My BR Ivy had sour crop and we treated and fixed that issue, though now, I believe I'm losing her to internal laying, just like the last three hens who passed on.

No, Cyn, not another one??? Ivy??? Were these all from the same hatch?? Hopefully, if they were, you have bred that bad (whatever) out of them!!
OH, remember when I posted a pic of my Miss Emily, my one and only blue orp pullet? You were the only one who said it looked like a roo to you? Well, let me tell you, I am looking at the feathering now on him/her and I do believe it is a roo. The neck feathers are extremely shiny and developing Saddle feathers? is that what you call them over the rear end and drapping to the sides? Then I also saw another post where someone said the first one to hatch is always a roo...Miss Prissy???...it was the first and only one to hatch so I may have my roo. It followed me and one of the dogs yesterday and jumped at the dog trying to spur him...do hens do that?

Yes, the rear draping feathers are saddle feathers. And hens can jump up and fight with their feet, but they dont have pointy saddles, so I think you have your answer on that big boy.
Carrie, my entire original flock is the same exact age, except Lexie and Ivy, who are two months younger and my first ever Barred Rocks. Same hatchery, though. I have several hatchery birds that I bought this year to keep various hatchlings company, but I really only want to breed my own from now on. I'm sure that breeder birds can also be internal layers, but so far, all mine are hatchery stock from my original flock, same hatchery. I am just praying that my Lexie lives a long time-she's very special. Another of the original RIRs is not well, either. I believe it's the same issue since she hasn't produced an egg in six months or more. And she's over her molt, too, so it isn't that.

Well, I cannot tell you how sorry I am that you have to go through all this!! You know I would see birds on line here and be ashamed of showing mine since mine looked so small compared with the others. I have now learned it is because they are hatchery birds. I really don't understand though since the hatcheries get their chicks from private owners?? But I do see a difference in my mixed breeds. I have cochin/ee's that are quite large and seem to be very healthy. With this orp roo I am ready to get rid of my cochin roos, who are really quite beautiful but I would prefer the orp roo. I also have a very handsome splash cochin/ee roo that I would like to keep. I no longer care if they are purebreds as long as I have a healthy flock.
I am truly sorry about Ivy. It is such a shame for what you and Tom have had to go through this year.
