VENT:Airport Security/Luggage Theft

My dh and dd just got back from a trip out of country. We were so sad to realise that on the way there AND on the way back things were stolen from the luggage.

I had bought combination locks,but airport security said they would be cut off because they were not bought from TSA. Secuirty is so *worried* about bomb issues yet it would seem quite easy for workers to slip something into bags when they have such an easy time of stealing items out of the bags. Where are the cameras and security covering the airport workers? I am happy that they are home safe,and that we did not lose the ENTIRE suitcase like many do. Oh but why did they have to steal the one thing I was really looking forward to giving the relatives?!?!!?!? Hope they enjoy our stuff.

I used to fly a lot and I've had things stolen from my luggage before as well. I am nearly ready to give up on flying. The hassle is beginning to outweigh the convenience to me anymore.

I never pack anything of value in my bags anymore. Learned the hard way!

Anything of value or importance goes in my carry on...no exceptions. I can buy more clothes...those go through baggage claim.

I completely understand about modern flying being frustrating to the point of it almost not being worth it. Frankly, we drive if we're traveling in the US and Canada. Still, theft by baggage handlers it not new. Even before all the new "security" I would just ship home what I had bought that was of value (monetary or sentimental). I have always just assumed that once I handed my luggage over it was kinda the equivalent of leaving it unattended on the street. It might or might not get stolen. Whereas, I have never lost anything shipping it. I even once shipped pre WWI Christmas ornaments home from Germany packed in my winter jacket and sweater. They all arrived in one piece and ahead of me. Still, I would file a complaint. You might get lucky.

You do not have to purchase luggage locks from TSA. They do, however, have to be of a type that TSA has a master key for--much like the maids in hotels have a master key to every room so that they can clean.

Sorry for your loss--are you sure it was not something confiscated by customs? One thing you can do with souveniers is to mail them home. DS bought a sword while in Germany and mailed it home--took nearly a month (has to clear customs).

Here is the story,

A girl friend of mine was at the airport, already past security, was going down the escalator, her long skirt got caught in the escalator and stopped the thing, well she could not get it out. A maintenance guy comes over asks if she was stuck, my girlfriend said well yea (????). He told her to take off her skirt and she told him that he was crazy that she was not undressing in front of the entire population of the Chicago airport

. So she reaches in her carry on and pulls out a full size pair of scissors and cuts the bottom of her skirt off.

Where was security when they checked her carry on? No matter how safe they want us to be there is always someone not doing their job.


BTW: I am so sorry your gifts got stolen. And, I am glad too your family is home safe.

I put anything I don't want to lose in carry on, too. I took a trip to a warm weather location once, when it was cold back home. On the day I left, I shipped my warm weather clothes and shoes home in a box. I wasn't going to need them back home for months. I think I sent home a plant stand for the house, too. The smaller goodies I had shopped for went home in my bag. I remember, every time I bought something, my sister and brother-in-law would ask, "How are you going to get all that home???"
